The need to understand society's behavior is becoming critical as our world becomes more complex and our culture more fragmented. Social issues, values, standards, and behavioral norms are continually changing, being questioned, and evolving in new ways almost too complex to fathom. Yet, at Florida Southern, our students accept the challenge of studying and ultimately helping shape society's behavior and its effects on our lives. And they find their work as fascinating and enjoyable as it is essential.

The Department has been rated 'excellent' for both social work teaching and applied social science teaching. In the most recent (2001) research assessment exercise we were given a 5 rating for social work (which included criminology). This confirms the 5 rating we received in 1996 and is official recognition that research in this department is of an international standard. Combined with our excellence in teaching this makes us one of the top university departments in the country for social work and criminology. The Department is engaged in the critical study of those 'social protection' policies, organizations and practices which affect all our lives. Applied social science is a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary field of study, hence a range of disciplines and approaches are represented amongst the expertise of our staff members. These include the theoretical, the empirical and the policy-orientated. Academic staff research and lecture in numerous fields including criminology, social policy, social work, feminist theory and politics, sociology of health and illness, disability studies, immigration controls and welfare, and critical and cultural theory. Some of the generic areas of expertise pursued in the Department are as follows:

Would you like to assist in keeping these pages updated? I'm looking for 20 to 40 criminologists who would like to assist with this site. You'll be in charge of keeping your section current, adding annotations, link checking, adding new sites, etc. I'd like to make it once again one of the premier criminal justice resources on the Web. This site is linked from thousands of other Web sites. Email me and let me know which area you would like to manage a page or section. When you write, include a link to your online vita or attach a copy. You can have students in your class help out, too, as a course project. Thanks,
    Cecil
