Crime Stories; Criminology and Crime Fiction - About the Course
Ever since Beccaria published On Crimes and Punishments in 1767 criminology has been a central field of study concerning public policy and crime control. Various academic disciplines and intellectual approaches have been highly influential in the field and have shaped its direction.
Justine
This subject explores the evolution of crime fiction and in so doing serves as a general introduction to the criminological field. The subject explores the emerging discourses between fact and fiction and the representation of crime in various media. Students are invited to explore various genres of crime fiction and also related fields of autobiography, historical narrative and journalism. The extent of the crime fiction discourse course will serve as a general introduction to criminological theory for some students. Those who are already familiar with the theoretical basis of criminology do not risk duplication and should still be able to find challenging materials and issues.
Building on this basic knowledge, this subject explores the field of crime fiction as an alternative discourse of crime policy.

"My Criminology degree is always a topic of interest at interviews I have attended and it has definitely made me stand out from the crowd." Joanna Lowe, graduated 2000 BA (Hons) Criminology Criminology offers the opportunity to study some of the most intractable problems in contemporary society. Law and order, crime and punishment and the future of criminal justice are issues which face everyone. Studying Criminology offers an opportunity to explore questions about these issues in some depth.
The kinds of questions that are addressed include:
  • Who is criminal? Why and how do we punish people? Does prison work? What is justice? Is there a war on crime and can it be won?
Criminology staff are active in research across a range of topics, feeding policy and theoretical developments into the curriculum and ensuring a contemporary basis to the subject.

INTRODUCTION: GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Criminology and Penology Abstracts is "An international abstracting service covering the etiology of crime and juvenile delinquency, the control and treatment of offenders, criminal procedure, and the administration of justice." USABILITY: This abstract service is not difficult to use, although it would be improved by the addition of a five year cumulative index or an index for each of the first two titles. The existing annual indexes are extensive and detailed, requiring the scanning of each index entry for effective use. The subdivisions of the main sections of the abstracts are quite specific and helpful in getting to the right section. There are no instructions to the user. D. SCOPE:
