School Programs
The Crime Prevention Division, in cooperation with the NC School Resource Officers Association and the NC Center for the Prevention of School Violence , assists local law enforcement and school personnel in establishing and maintaining local school resource officer (SRO) programs. Division staff provides specialized training, technical assistance, and materials enabling them to operate effectively in the middle and high school environment. Often, they provide the first opportunity for young people to interact with a law enforcement officer in a non-adversarial setting. SRO's become role models for young people; they also become trusted adults and teachers. In agencies with School Resource Officers, the number of crimes occurring in schools has dropped dramatically. (A resource guide and technical assistance are available). School Security Assessments When school is in session there are always reports of thefts, vandalism, trespass and weapons on campus. This trend is not, unfortunately, much different from that witnessed by law enforcement agencies during the past few years. The issues of safety and security within the schools of North Carolina, however, are being given greater emphasis than ever. One important way in which crime prevention officers can assist their local schools is by conducting security assessments of the facilities in their communities. There are a number of actions that can be taken in existing schools to reduce the likelihood of problems occurring. Whenever a school is renovated, the crime prevention officer should assume a major role in scrutinizing safety and security issues. Of course, it is when a new school is being designed that the concept of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) can most effectively be implemented.
