Indeed, the Kartanaka government reacted with strong criticism last week after green activists forced India's federal Ministry of Environment and Forests to defer by a year a decision on the commercial planting of Monsanto's Bollgard variety of Bt cotton. With Greenpeace International and other activist groups breathing down its neck, the ministry ordered yet another year of trials for Bollgard, which has been field tested in India since 1998 by the Maharashtra Hybrid Seed Company (MAHYCO). Monsanto has a substantial stake in this firm. The final round of tests will be conducted under strict supervision by scientists from the federal government's Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) which, in the past, has expressed doubts about the scientific soundness of MAHYCO's tests. Green groups like Greenpeace, the New Delhi-based Forum for Biotechnology and Food Security and the Pune-based Kalpavriksh praised the "precautionary approach" adopted by the ministry's Genetic Engineering Approval Council. However, Karnataka Agriculture Minister T B Jayachandra viewed the approval council's decision as an unnecessary hurdle between the laboratory and the farmer. "Tests are over, and it is time to implement technology," Jayachandra said.

Both the Gutenberg Bible (15th Century) and the King James Bible (17th Century) were printed on hemp-based papers. In addition to paper, hemp can be used for edible oil, automotive oil, cooking and heating fuel, fabric, medicine and construction beams. Hemp's fibre length and strength make it optimal for replacing old growth forest fibres in high quality papers. Hemp hurds produce four times the paper per acre as wood. Hemp paper is a renewable industrial raw material and is environmentally friendly. Its pulp is processed with hydrogen peroxide where wood based paper is processed with sulfuric acid. The wood-pulp process is a major industrial pollutant while hemp-pulp is almost pollution free. Hemp paper is stronger, acid free, has a longer shelf life and costs less than half as much to process as wood-based paper. Hemp paper can be recycled 10 times where wood-based paper can only be recycled twice without losing integrity and requiring additional virgin fibre content.

This picture shows the plant flowering. As the flower becomes mature, it develops into a cotton boll. Here is a picture of a young cotton boll (the cotton boll is inside the white square). The boll contains the cotton and the seeds. This is a mature cotton boll that is ready to be harvested. The combine used to harvest cotton is called a cotton picker. How much do you think this would cost? If you guessed $225,000, then you are right. This is cotton seed. The seed on the left still has the lint left on it. In contrast, the seed on the right had the lint removed (by acid). Also, the seed on the right, which will be used for planting, has been treated with a chemical to prevent diseases and insects.
