http://www.agriculture.purdue.edu/aganswers/2002/6-21_Fungal_Disease.html
Written June 21, 2002 Fungal disease could plague no-till corn crops Corn growers who use no-till or minimal tillage practices face potential disease problems this growing season. Wet weather conditions and residue left in reduced tillage fields has growers and Ohio State University researchers monitoring cornfields for anthracnose, a fungal disease. The disease, which caused a widespread yield loss last year, is off to the same start this year, said Pat Lipps, an Ohio State University Extension plant pathologist with the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. "The same situation as last year has developed, and growers with the problem last year definitely know the potential loss," Lipps said. Brown, oval lesions begin appearing on the lowest leaves of infected plants in June, Lipps said. Damp conditions later in the season foster the disease as it climbs up the plant leaf by leaf, and spores from leaf lesions cause stalk infections. Plants with stalk infections die prematurely and lodge before harvest, causing yield losses, Lipps said.

PROTECTION OF corn crops. How To Identify Black Bear Damage visualobservation of the bear causing damage;; evidence of bear tracks

PROTECTION OF CORN CROPS How To Identify Black Bear Damage
  • visual observation of the bear causing damage; evidence of bear tracks, feces, hair, or other sign (Figure 6); presence of somewhat circular patches within the field's interior where stalks have been pulled inward and flattened or broken (Figure 7); ears of corn that are completely eaten or cleaned of kernels, but not all ears on a stalk will be affected. More plants may be damaged than are actually consumed (Figure 8); damage occurring at the "milk-stage" of development.
Care must be taken to distinguish damage caused by bears from that of other potential predators. Raccoons frequently will pull down stalks, strip ears from a stalk, and chew kernels from an ear; the large circular patches of damaged corn in a field usually are lacking with raccoons and less total area will be affected when compared with bears. Other animals, such as porcupines, deer, beaver, and even coyote, may cause damage to corn. Stalks may be chewed and felled (beaver, porcupine), ears and silk are often nipped (deer, coyote), or whole plants may be removed (beaver). It is important to check all field signs to correctly identify damage caused by these species versus bears. Figure 6: Bear Footprint Figure 7: Aerial view of cornfield damaged by bear Preventive Measures If damage has not yet occurred:
  • keep mowed, open corridors around and between fields;

KMP News Release - August 30, 2001 Farmers Uproot Bt CORN Crops, Urged Congress' Intervention on Illegal Field Testing of GMOs In a press conference today in Quezon City, the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP)urged Congress to intervene on the on-going illegal field trials of the Bt-corn conducted by Monsanto. The group also demanded for appropriate actions and punishment to all those responsible for such and a complete halt in the entry of GMOs in the country, stating its immense threat to food security, the people's sovereignty, the environment and human health. Also present in the press conference were representatives from Masipag, SEARICE and CBCP Vice-chair Dinualdo Guttierez. Only yesterday, August 29, more than 800 farmers, church people and students staged a surprise attack on Monsanto Agro-corporation field testing site in South Cotabato and uprooted with their bare hands Bt corn (Bacillus thuringiensis) crops that were about to blossom and start contaminating. The farmers gathered in Marbel, South Cotabato and marched toward Barangay Maltana, Tampacan town and uprooted Bt corn crops covering about ¼ hectares in protest of the on-going field trials.

Several biotech companies have agreed not to grow genetically engineered
corn intended for pharmaceutical development in states where it could
contaminate neighboring fields planted with crops for human consumption.
The self-imposed moratorium was adopted this month by members of the
Biotechnology Industry Organization. A genetically engineered StarLink corn
variety approved solely for animal feed turned up in taco shells two years ago, prompting a massive recall and an expensive recovery effort. "We've got to eliminate the misconceptions and the fears that were instilled by the StarLink fiasco," said Robert Dose, vice president for business development at ProdiGene Inc., which has developed a corn that contains an

Corn Crops Field Crop Research Priorities Index Page 1. Genetic Improvement of Corn for Ontario
(FCRSCC Priority Grouping #1 Innovative and Enhanced Germplasm) The existence of an efficient continuum from inbred development through to commercial hybrid evaluation is critical to the Ontario corn industry. Elite germplasm may be developed to increase productivity, meet specific needs of a bio-based industry, or to confer nutritional improvements. However, these advances will have little impact on the provincial economy unless a system exists for ensuring that these advances can be integrated, refined and tested across Ontario.
Many of the priorities for the corn industry depend upon the successful incorporation of genetic traits, natural or modified, into superior breeding lines (e.g. cold tolerance, pest resistance, premium market traits, etc.) Although there are large hybrid development programs in the private sector, inbred/hybrid development must also continue to be part of the public breeding programs, since it is only through locally adapted germplasm that the true value of genetic enhancements to corn growers can be properly evaluated.

Fig.1 SAR image (102 KB)
Fig.2 Chart (6 Kb)

Polarimetric radar imagery acquired over corn fields around Ottawa suggest that regardless of polarization, very limited within field information related to corn crop condition is contained in the SAR imagery once the corn canopy reaches a height of about one metre. When the crop reaches this height and biomass is substantial, the SAR signal saturates. This signal saturation appears to be a problem for all the linear (HH, VV, HV) and circular (RR, RL) polarizations. However, when the imagery is acquired early in the growing season, significant within field variability can be detected (Fig.1 SAR image) . Although the greatest contrast is present in the linear cross-polarization (HV) and the circular co-polarization (RR), within field patterns are visible in all polarizations (Fig.2 Chart) . The RR and HV polarizations are both sensitive to canopy volume scattering.
