All are based on common drivers, development tools and firmware, intended to make product development simpler, quicker and less costly. The Intel RAID Controller SRCZCR is a high-performance modular RAID card featuring Ultra160 and Ultra320 SCSI, and Serial ATA compatibility. The SRCZCR controller enables low-cost RAID capability through standards-based RAID I/O Steering technology, which enables RAID capabilities through a simple PCI plug-in arrangement that utilizes existing SCSI or Serial ATA disk-interfaces. If you're tired of mixing on-screen using just your mouse and keyboard, then it's worth considering a hardware MIDI controller. But with so many different models available, how do you choose the one that's right for you? Paul White One of the most common complaints about computer-based audio systems (other than stability) is that the physical user interface comprises a keyboard and mouse, while traditional studio equipment is operated using knobs and faders, where several parameters can be changed simultaneously if necessary. An obvious solution to this problem is to add some kind of MIDI control surface that will translate the action of physical knobs and faders into MIDI messages, which in turn control the virtual knobs and faders on screen. The problem arises when you come to choose a control surface, because there are several different types at prices from under a couple of hundred pounds to well over a thousand pounds. In a forthcoming issue we'll be talking to specific users about how they manage different types of control surface in practice, but as a prelude to this it makes sense to look at the different types of controller available in more general terms and to focus on their strengths and weaknesses. Starting Simple The simplest type of controller is the familiar MIDI fader box, where a typical model might offer eight or 16 faders, plus a number of knobs or buttons. A useful addition for guitar players working alone is an assignable footswitch jack for hands-free punching in and out. These simple controllers use standard non-motorised faders, which makes them relatively inexpensive to build, and most allow you to define what type of MIDI message is sent by each fader. For example, if you want to control the channel fader levels on a typical sequencer mixer, you'll probably need to set each fader to a different MIDI channel and have it send MIDI Continuous Controller number seven (CC7) over the range zero to 127. If knobs are provided, they could be set to control pan pots using CC10 messages.

USING BUDGET MIDI HARDWARE CONTROLLERS WITH A PC A little money spent on a hardware control surface for your PC can yield a dramatic improvement in ergonomics and ease of use. Martin Walker explores the options. I recently posted a poll on the SOS Forum to get a feel for just what proportion of musicians use soft synths. The musicians who responded nearly all fell into two main groups. The first group was quite happy to use any combination of hardware or software synths to get the range of sounds that they required, and I must admit to belonging to this category myself. The second group was just as large, and admitted to hardly ever using software synths. However, many of them qualified this by saying that they would be far more likely to use soft synths if they didn't have to operate them with a mouse. The more traditional knob, switch, and button interface of a hardware synth is certainly a lot easier for hands-on control, even if you still have to edit and modify sounds around the limitations of a tiny LCD window. It also has the huge advantage that unlike a mouse-based interface, you can alter more than one control simultaneously. With the addition of your MIDI + Audio sequencer, even a budget controller can provide more expressive control of any hardware or software synth. Complex real-time filter sweeps and modulations become easy, you can weave layers of different sounds in and out of the mix with a simple twist of your fingers, mixdown of both audio and MIDI sounds becomes easier and more intuitive, and you can even use them to provide your sequencer with rem
