A stupor of despair went up to heaven when the god of the storm turned daylight into darkness, when he smashed the land like a cup." An account of the Deluge from the Epic of Gilgamesh, circa 2200 B.C. If you are fortunate enough to see the storm of shooting stars predicted for the Nov. 18 peak of the Leonid meteor shower, you'll be watching a similar but considerably less powerful version of events which some scientists say brought down the world's first civilizations. Comets and Meteors
A comet or a meteor streaking across the sky is an exciting sight for anyone, and a telescope can make these objects even more fascinating to watch.
Photo courtesy of NASA Comet Kohoutek Comets Comets are brief visitors from the outer solar system. They change brightness and develop tails as they pass close to the sun. The views of comets in telescopes vary dramatically with each comet. Comet Hale-Bopp was a spectacular image in my small telescope. I could see some of the nucleus, the coma and the dust tail. And comet Hyakutake had a similar view. However, not all comets brighten or develop enough to reveal good images in small telescopes. Many observers were disappointed in the showings of comets Kohoutek and Halley in the 1980s. Many amateur astronomers search for comets with binoculars or a small telescope and a great deal of patience. Meteors Meteors are debris (dust, rocks) that float about the solar system. These objects travel through the solar system at thousands of miles or kilometers per hour and, when they strike our atmosphere, they burn up because of

How are comets and meteors different?
Comets can produce meteors, but meteors cannot produce comets. Comets are dusty 'iceburgs' in space and can contain large rocks held together in a matrix of ices. Once a comet has been by the Sun enough times, it has steadily lost most of its icy material leaving behind a 'dead comet' which consists of rocky material and dust grains clustered near the original head of the comet in its orbit, but also strewn along the comets original orbit. These rocks and dust grains, can enter the Earth's atmosphere if the Earth's orbit happens to intersect the orbit of the comet, and cause meteor showers and fireballs. Not all meteors and fireballs we see, however, come from the larger cometary bodies. Many if not most comes from 'sporadic' sources in the asteroid belt. Meteors are the atmospheric phenomenon we see as bodies enter the atmosphere at high speed, some of these particles can be from comets, and some from other sources in interplanetary space. Teacher Lesson Plans
Do You Know Your Comets from Your Meteors? Objective The student will classify phrases as describing meteors, meteoroids, and comets. Background Meteors are streaks of light in the sky caused by bits of comet dust disintegrating in our atmosphere. Cometary dust particles are called meteoroids. The streak of light is called a meteor. Meteoroids are typically very small and light. They are smaller than grains of sand and weigh even less. Comets are balls of dirty mineral-laden ice that orbit the sun. They are about the size of asteroids. When comets pass close to the sun, they begin to evaporate and leave behind a trail of gas and dust. The dusty trail, also called a meteoroid stream, also orbits the sun. When the earth passes through a stream of meteoroids, we have a meteor shower. Materials The student will need a copy of the article (for younger kids or older kids ) and of the activity sheet (for younger kids or older kids ). There are also answer keys (for younger kids or older kids ) and a glossary Estimated Time This may take ten to twenty minutes.

Andy Druga, noted astrophotographer, demonstrates how easy it is to "Catch" a comet. While I used to sponsor the Chiefland Astronomy Village, I have recently turned this over to Joe Mize. I have since moved away from Florida and am not as in touch with events as Joe. His site is excellent and has all the up to date information. If you are ever in the Chiefland area, you HAVE to go and see the site. You can visit Joe Mize's chiefland site here I am an avid astrophotographer and enjoy getting good color shots of great deep sky objects. I was able to capture this image using a 1 hour exposure on Kodak PJM film with a 10" LX50 SCT @F6.3. This is one of my favorite shots. Using a 0.42X converter to the front of a 28mm lens (stopped down to F4), I took a 30 minute exposure on Fuji 400G film. This was able to capture the major portion of the milky way. The picture was published in Astronomy Magazine. The red objects at the bottom are the tops of several campers illuminated by red flashlights. To the southeast one can see the lights of Orlando over 100 miles away. SOME OTHER PAGES ON MY SITE RELATED TO ASTRONOMY

This is anew comet discovered by NEAT (Near-Earth Asteroids Tracking program) team, in NASA, on Nov 6, 2002. The comet has an orbit close to the sun about 0.1AU in Feb 2003, we could observe as a naked-eye comet from the end of Jan to Feb, 2003.

And Mr. Ikeya is well known as a discoverer of comet Ikeya-Seki, one of greatest comets in 20th century. Comet Ikeya-Zhang was observed as a naked-eye comet in March and April, 2002. And it's pointed out that the comet may be recurrence of 17th century's comet observed in 1661.

The MPC is at a breaking point. Brian Marsden issued a wake-up call yesterday to all NEO astronomers and the international astronomical community (see Editorial Notice below). Over the years, Brian and his colleagues at the MPC have gone out of their way to improve the data flow and services. But there is now a real threat that the MPC will have to cut back its services if serious financial support is not soon forthcoming. more... Minor Planet Center Issues Editorial Left.
