Pollution Prevention Training in
Technical and Vocational School Programs
SURVEY SUMMARY
November, 2002
Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming INTRODUCTION The Peaks to Prairies Pollution Prevention Center is an EPA-funded project operated by the Montana State University Extension Service. The Center serves as a pollution prevention information clearinghouse for Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. In cooperation with U.S. EPA Region 8 states, Peaks to Prairies looks for ways to encourage adoption of pollution prevention practices by citizens, businesses, educational institutions and government agencies. The Center networks with state and local pollution prevention service providers by offering access to current information and contacts, encouraging collaboration and leveraging of resources, and facilitating communication about activities and projects. APPROACH A survey of vocational and technical schools in Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming was conducted in the spring and summer of 2002. The purpose of the survey was to determine how waste minimization, source reduction, and pollution prevention concepts are being included in vocational training programs. We also wanted to determine how schools preferred to receive information about these topics. With the results, we hoped to publicize examples of how curriculums are currently teaching this information as well as identify opportunities for more integration. Survey results have been made available to help schools refine existing programs and identify partnerships for future collaborations.

Problem Statement Analysis Rationale Results ... Responsibilities Met The Problem Funding of technology is a problem for most school districts. Business departments should have access to additional vocational funds to purchase equipment and books. The disbursement of vocational dollars is inconsistent across school districts. Is this inconsistency because of state policy or a policy made by individual school districts?
Top of page
Analysis Schools rely on department budgets and bond elections to purchase equipment. Business departments have an additional means for purchasing equipment from the federal government. The federal government provides funds for vocational programs. These programs prepare students to enter the market place. The district receives a stipend for each student who completes a vocationally approved course. The students are tracked to see if they reach completer status. Completer status has been attained when a student has completed 3 or more business classes. In order to qualify for vocational funding a teacher with a vocational credential must teach the approved courses. A vocational credential requires 4,000 to 6,000 hours or work in the business sector and the completion of 15 hours of vocational coursework. Renewal of the credential is every 5 years by completing 6 semester hours of college courses.

Register early, as space is limited! Dear CAN, I am a Special Ed teacher in Florida. I taught in Arkansas for 17years and just recently came to Florida. They have some rules down here that I question and I would like to know if the difference is just a state level difference or if maybe Florida and my district are breaking some rules. First when a student is due for a three year reevaluation in Arkansas, they had at least five different tests including a WISC, a Woodcock and three different perception tests. In Florida only an academic testing is done. When I suggested that a student might need a WISC, I was told that IQ tests don't change enough to warrent the testing. Is this true? Should they be doing more testing? Second, when my LD students are in high school, their LD classes do not count toward a high school diploma. If they do not go into regular curriculum classes, they can go all four years and not get a high school diploma but a certificate of attendance. This effectively blocks them from getting in the military, vocational schools and college. I know in Arkansas this was not the case.
