University of Colorado School of Medicine Receives AAMC Outstanding Community Service Award
Washington, D.C., October 28, 2000 As the only medical school within 500 miles, the University of Colorado (CU) School of Medicine has the unique sense of duty to serve all citizens, not only in Denver, but the entire region. Whether caring for the medically indigent, increasing the participation of traditionally underrepresented groups in the health professions, providing patient care to disadvantaged or isolated communities or addressing social needs in a medical context, CU is creating a positive impact on the vast region the school serves. In recognition of the school's commitment, CU received the 2000 AAMC Outstanding Community Service Award today at the Association's 111th annual meeting in Chicago. "The purpose of this award is to recognize the vitally important services medical schools and teaching hospitals provide to communities across the country," said AAMC President Jordan J. Cohen, M.D. "The University of Colorado has established itself as an invaluable resource to the state of Colorado and an example of the difference a medical school can make."

Colorado Healthy People 2010 is an Initiative of The Colorado Trust Despite Colorado's reputation as being a haven for the health conscious, people across the state - just like people across the U.S. - are experiencing serious, but preventable health problems. For example, just 24% of the adults in Colorado exercise the recommended amount each week, and over the last ten years, the rate of overweight adults in Colorado has risen from 16% to 34%. Being overweight and not getting regular physical activity is a deadly combination for many people, often leading to diabetes, heart disease and a host of other serious health problems. The Colorado Trust The Colorado Trust has committed $7.5 million over three-and-a-half years (2002-2005) to the Colorado Healthy People 2010 Initiative. It has designed the initiative to help people in the state to achieve the objectives of the national program, while addressing local needs. From the classroom to the boardroom, health education and prevention programs are key elements in reducing the degree and incidence of cardiovascular diseases. School Programs Research shows that habits and choices developed in childhood influence whether or not a person develops heart disease later in life. By teaching children the value of a balanced diet, physical activity and living tobacco-free, we can greatly reduce both the incidence and cost of heart disease and stroke. The AHA offers classroom educational kits filled with age-appropriate, fun activities covering exercise, nutrition, risk factors and more. HeartPower!

    Physical Activity and Nutrition
Updated February 2003 Physical inactivity and unhealthy eating are behaviors that have an impact on health. Together, they are responsible for at least 300,000 preventable deaths each year. Regular physical activity provides short-term benefits, such as reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, and reduces long-term risks for disability and premature death. Despite the proven benefits of being physically active, more than 60 percent of American adults do not engage in levels of physical activity necessary to provide health benefits ( see postcard ). Good nutrition lowers a person's risk for many chronic diseases. However, a considerable gap remains between recommended dietary patterns and what Americans actually eat. Only about one-fourth of U.S. adults eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
