Life on Plymouth Plantation Have you ever wondered what life was like 375 years ago in America? What did the men, women, and children first see and experience when they landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620? These brave people left their homes in England to escape religious persecution by immigrating to America! What if you and your family felt the need to fly to Jupiter and attempt to start a new life? Your family members would have no idea where they were going, what type of climate they would find, what they were going to eat, or if there were any hostile creatures living there already. Wouldn't that be scary? This was a scary but adventurous time in American history. Were the Pilgrims the first people to inhabit America? Actually, the Native American Indian tribes had already lived in what came to be called America for hundreds of years before the first European settlers immigrated in 1620. View Teacher Notes The Task In this activity you will be discovering about the early Americans by looking at a recreation of Plymouth Plantation in 1627. Also, you will be looking at a variety of maps, both modern and maps from the 17th century. Using these sources, you will be answering questions, discovering life in early America and writing a series of letters. After taking a virtual tour of Plymouth Plantation you will assume the character of a child who traveled to the New World aboard the Mayflower. The child you are portraying is an actual histroical person who came from England to the New World in 1620. As many Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower did, you will send letters to your friends and family back in England. In your letters you will explain what Plymouth is like and you will advise your family back in England as to what they should bring with them when they make their journey over.

  • Bryan, Sally (2000). " The colonial times: A learning environment for the 21st century." Lemon Road ES. Falls Church, Virginia. Fairfax County Public Schools. This teacher researcher wanted to show that when students take responsibility for their own learning, the learning is richer in content and deeper in concept development. She was curious to see how this environment might encourage different learning styles and student strengths to become significant factors in learning. The paper describes what happened when the students engaged in a WebQuest about Colonial Times. DuFault, Yvonne.(1996). "Kids who care: An action research project designed to build student leadership." Markham District High School, Ontario, Canada. This Canadian high school teacher felt bullied by her students, believing them to be mainly self-centered individuals. Searching for a way to turn her students into caring individuals, she began an action research project to investigate what happens when adolescents engage in service-related projects designed to have them focus on others rather than themselves. Dufault's paper tells of her experiences with her students and their experiences with KIDS WHO CARE that transformed them into caring individuals as they engaged in projects which emphasize helping others build a better society.

The Second Graders enjoyed their trip to the Queens Museum of Art where they saw a panoramic view of the five boroughs of New York. They learned about the many famous landmarks in each borough. Each class collaboratively designed a model or collage of the city. There has been measurement madness in our classrooms as we measured the height width and girth of many objects. Our non-fiction researchers have been utilizing different mediums such as books, newspapers and the internet to find information about their chosen topics. We enjoyed having guest readers in our classrooms this month.
The Fourth Grade has been splashing around with our awesome science water kits. We have looked at and experimented with the properties of water, including surface tension. We loved the experimental work we did trying to make clay float. In math we are immersed in the world of fractions and we are really getting a lot out of our morning warm ups. We know that explaining our thinking is a critical skill. We are so excited to welcome Mr. Risola back for our second grouping of health classes. Watch us continue to grow as spring approaches.

Program of Concentration in American and Southern Studies The interdisciplinary major consists of 36 hours of course work, to be distributed among various disciplines as indicated below. Emphasis is on political, cultural, economic, and related trends or events that contribute to the making of American culture and character in all its diversity. After completing the core requirements, students must concentrate on a theme, such as those named above, chosen in consultation with the director of the program. Students should expect to study the problems, developments, and crises of social history, technology, visual studies, gender, race, ethnicity, media, and political and literary culture. Each student will work with an advisor to design a program that meets his or her intellectual needs and interests. Students should note that no more than 6 hours at the 100 level can count toward the interdisciplinary major and that often prerequisites exist for the courses that may be used in the major. Independent study, research courses, and selected topics courses should have topics appropriate to the student's course of study. Students seeking a second major may count a maximum of 6 hours of course work to meet requirements in both majors. Requirements for the interdisciplinary major in American Studies include completion of the following:

It is the study of a society and a nation state and accordingly draws on the disciplines of the Social Sciences and Humanities. Level 1 of the programme begins with modules designed to give students a broad foundation, which reveals something of the scope of American Studies, and a basis for informed choice in respect of second and third year studies. We begin with an interdisciplinary module intended to supply a broad grounding of central issues in American culture, the formative experiences of American history between colonial times and the Civil War, and the political economy of the USA between the close of the Civil War and the onset of the Great Depression. At Levels 2 and 3 the programme takes a multidisciplinary approach and offers modules drawing from a wide variety of the Humanities and Social Sciences. It is also possible to take American Studies as a Joint Honours degree with one or two of the following subjects: English, Film Studies, Geography, History, Law, Media and Communication Studies, Philosophy, Politics, Sociology, Tourism, War Studies.
