Until 1499: Numerous Amerindian tribes were spread out over Colombia's rugged terrain. They include the Calima, Muiscas, Quimbaya, Sinú, and Tayrona peoples. Little is known about these tribes. Although they made finely-crafted artifacts, most of them were not city builders like the Incas. When the Spaniards arrived, their gold and silver ornaments were melted down and their settlements were destroyed. Although Colombia is named after Christopher Columbus, he never actually set foot in the country. The first Europeans to reach Colombia were led by Alonso de Ojeda. On his second voyage to the New World, his party ventured into the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta region. The local Amerindians possessed gold ornaments, leading the Spaniards to believe that the golden city of El Dorado was located in Colombia. Ojeda then explored along the coast, where he was fatally wounded by the natives. The Indians also destroyed Ojeda's settlement San Sebastián de Urabá.

COLOMBIA
HISTORICAL CHRONOLOGY Until 1499:
Rodrigo de Bastidas founds Santa Marta, the first European settlement in Colombia to withstand the Amerindian opposition. The settlement declined after 1532 when the local Indians refused to supply it with food. Perdo de Heredia founds Cartagena, which soon becomes Colombia's main trading center and port. The Viceroyalty of Peru is split up. Colombia is now administered as part of the Viceroyalty of New Granada (Virreynato de la Nueva Granada). A tax rebellion by the Comuneros in Socorro becomes the first Colombian revolt against Spain. Napoleon Bonaparte replaces the King of Spain with his brother, Joseph Bonaparte. Several Spanish colonial outposts, including several Colombian cities, refuse to recognize the new King's authority. 1815 to 1817: Napoleon sends troops to Colombia, which reestablishes his authority. El Libertador , succeeds in driving the Spanish out of Gran Colombia (Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Panama). He attempts to add Peru and Bolivia to

TOP STORY- Javier Alvarez is sacked after Colombia lose to a shocking by Brazil
Javier Alvarez is replaced by Luis Augosto "Chiqui" Garcia after one of the most humiliating defeat Colombia have experienced for 20 years. Even though it was the under-23's we still had some good players lined up for the game. He and his technical advisors were sacked by the Colombia Football Federation (CFF).
This comes just days after Colombia get ready to play in the 2000 Gold Cup in the US. I just hope that this does not affect our game-play in the Gold Cup as that would be a real shame.

90. CNN - U.S. Drug Czar To Meet With Colombian Leader - October 18, 1997

U.S. drug czar to meet with Colombian leader
Concern about talks due to Samper's alleged drug ties
October 18, 1997
Web posted at: 11:01 p.m. EDT (0301 GMT) BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) The White House's point man on drugs is doing what some in Washington consider ill-advised, even heretical: Barry McCaffrey is meeting with the very man he has branded an accomplice of international drug traffickers. The U.S. drug czar's scheduled meeting Monday with President Ernesto Samper, who allegedly won office with $6 million in Cali cartel contributions, was privately opposed by many in Washington's anti-drug establishment, administration sources say. Yet the meeting breaks a more than two-year moratorium on high-level U.S. contacts with Samper and appears to reflect growing concern over Colombia's inability to cope with a strengthening leftist rebel insurgency that could imperil this long-standing democracy. Though McCaffrey's portfolio is drugs, the ex-Army general is a Gulf and Vietnam war veteran concerned with security and well aware of Colombian guerrilla involvement in narcotics. He is acquainted with this Andean nation from his days as chief of the U.S. military's Southern Command. "The issue is not Samper ... and it's not just drugs, but political stability," said Marc Chernick of Georgetown University. The Clinton administration "is just now discovering that there's more going on in Colombia than just drug trafficking."

Colombian Beef and Sweet Potato Stew
  • 1 pound beef boneless chuck (or cut-up stew meat)
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1 1/2 tsps. olive or veg. oil
  • 3 cups (1-inch pieces) peeled sweet potatoes

  • 2 whole cloves
  • 1 dry bay leaf
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 1 large onion, cut into eighths

  • 8 dried apricots, cut in half
  • chopped fresh parsley
1. Remove excess fat from beef. Cut beef into 1-inch pieces. Sprinkle beef with salt and pepper. Heat oil in 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat.
