A glorious day for us Chinook tribal chairman Gary Johnson The Chinook tribe, which lives south of Seattle, in Washington State, is noted for helping some of the first European explorers who arrived in the region, with food and information. The 2,000 members of the tribe will now be eligible for more government money and the chance to apply for reservation lands near their traditional home. "It's a historic day and a glorious day for us," said Chinook tribal chairman Gary Johnson at a ceremony at the Interior Department. "We're just really excited, because our grandmothers and our grandfathers and our families have worked for this day for so long." When famed explorers Lewis and Clark emerged onto the US' northern Pacific coast almost 200 years ago, they met the Chinook Indians. The small tribe soon became prolific traders and a version of the Chinook language became the standard trading language throughout the region, well into what is now Canada.

The Clatsop Hat B y the time the expedition arrived at the mouth of the Columbia River, the clothing they had started out with had long since worn out, and the leather replacements they had lately made were rotting quickly in the rainy coastal winter. They made new shirts, pants, and moccasins from the hides of the elk they killed for meat, but they could come up with nothing in the way of a head covering that was nearly as practical as the style perfected by the Clatsops. The captains ordered hats for the entire command, which were delivered on a drizzly February 22. We can well imagine that the men received them with a mixture of hilarity and relief. Ironically, the 22nd was one of the very few clear days they had that entire winter at Fort Clatsop. This picture also symbolizes the mutual respect and admiration that prevailed between the men of the expedition and many of the Indians they met along their route, all the way from St. Louis to the mouth of the Columbia River and back. We should remember that almost certainly the expedition could not have been completed without the help, guidance, and good will of countless individual Native Americans, mostly unnamed in the journals, and thus forever anonymous. Once you've established the state and limited the area to five to ten counties, go to the American Indian Data Center at http://www.indiandata.com/ to locate a map of Native American tribes. Once you know which tribes lived in the area, you may be able to locate the tribal headquarters for a particular tribe or several tribes. Look for maps showing the area at the time your ancestors lived there. Be aware that the tribal headquarters may now be far removed from where your family originally lived. Tribes were often relocated according to the government's whims or because of changes in state and county borders. Drought and famine also caused tribes to relocate. Research the time period by examining old newspapers and periodicals. Doing so will help you determine the circumstances and conditions under which your ancestors lived. TIP 2 NATIVE AMERICAN TRIBAL NAMES Recently, someone asked for information on the Chinook Native American tribe. A search of the Internet revealed little information.
