A Elizabeth Cabot Cary Agassiz, 1822-1907. Born to society parents in Boston, Elizabeth married Louis Agassiz in 1850 and assumed the role of mother to his three boys. She opened the Agassiz School in 1855 thus providing her family with a regular income and local teenage girls with a high-school education. Agassiz published A First Lesson in Natural History in 1859 and joined Louis on the 1865-1866 Thayer Expedition to Brazil. During these scientific trips Agassiz served as Louis's scribe and later published her own journal of the Thayer voyage in the Atlantic Monthly and as a book. Louis died in 1873 and Agassiz turned her focus to women's education, becoming the first president of Radcliffe College in 1893 and serving until 1899. Josephine M. Allen. Blanche Ames, 1878-1969. Mary Hunter Austin, 1868-1934. Born in Carlinville, Illinois, Mary graduated from Blackborn College and moved with her homesteading family to California’s Joaquin Valley in 1888. The western landscape was to provide Austin with the inspiration for most of her books, including The Land of Little Rain, published in 1903.

Chemical Genealogy Work Area
These pages are a work area in which information about every person considered for inclusion in the MSU Chemical Genealogy charts is gathered and evaluated. The prime interest lies in identifying the preceptor of an individual and in gathering identifying information about an individual. Note that references to several chemical genealogy sources, including those available on the WWW in addition to reference books, were made in an attempt to find information upon which to make choices: MSU sources:
  • "McCarty (1969)" refers to the publication: McCarty, C. N., J. Chem. Ed. (1969). 46, 317-318. The entries contain: (for MSU Faculty) name, degree institution, preceptor; or, (for non-MSU Faculty) name, life dates, preceptor.
  • "We (after McCarty)" refers to the state of our information as of 27 November 2001 after years of building on McCarty's work by many people, and before referring to Chemical Genealogy Database created by Mainz and Girolami. The entries contain: name, life dates, degree, degree date, degree institution, [and for MSU Faculty start date, end date], preceptor.
  • "Stein" refers to Robin Stein, a senior in Chemistry (2001-2002) at Michigan State University and an enthusiastic and active participant in the MSU Chemical Genealogy project for the year.

    d. November 2, 1966, Ithaka, NY, U.S.A.

Peter Josephus Wilhelmus Debye was Dutch-American physicist greatly contributed to the theory of electrolyte solutions. He also studied dipole moments of molecules, advanced knowledge of the arrangement of atoms in molecules and of the distances between the atoms. In 1916 he showed that solid substances could be used in powdered form for X-ray study of their crystal structures, thus eliminating the difficult step of first preparing good crystals. Debye won Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 1936, "for his contributions to our knowledge of molecular structure through his investigations on dipole moments and on the diffraction of X-rays and electrons in gases".

Known as the "Master of the Molecule" because of his pioneering work in molecular structure, Peter J.W. Debye was born in Maastricht, Holland, March 24, 1884, son of Wilhelmus and Maria Reumkens Dibje.
