A 42 page paper discussing basic designs enroute to devising a project focusing on voice recognition circuitry and control. The intended application is not ultimately intended to be that used for voice-to-text designs, though it could be. Rather, the project focus is more that designed as a security measure, such as that ensuring that the user of a cellular telephone is indeed the subscriber to the cellular service on which that specific telephone's service is billed. Voice recognition can be seen to be approaching a standard in the future. That standard seems to be far in the future, but it likely will be attached to natural language and context sensitivity. In order to be truly useful, it will need to be based on the simplest circuits achievable. Includes 16 figures, bibliography lists 25 sources.

This is the home page of John Bechhoefer's group in the Department of Physics at Simon Fraser University , in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. The SFU Library has something of a web space going. MASTER OF BASIC SCIENCE
PHYSICS OPTION
The Department of Physics and Energy Science offers a Master of Science Degree through the interdisciplinary Master of Basic Science degree with a Physics option. The department offers a traditional set of physics core courses and a variety of specialized electives emphasizing our strengths in thin film, surface and computational physics. Students may choose a thesis or non-thesis option. The program can be completed in two years (4 semesters) and all courses are offered in the evenings (after 4:30 pm). The program is outlined below with detailed catalog information following. The earlier M.S. in Physics degree was discontinued by the State of Colorado on March 2, 2000. Physics Research at CU-Colorado Springs
Tour our Solid State and Thin Film Physics Lab
Over the last four years, our faculty have averaged a total of 12 refereed publications per year (2 per faculty member per year). At a university with a heavy teaching commitment this level of productivity is excellent. Our six faculty have brought in an average of $ 180,000 per year in grants and contracts and $ 160,000 per year in equipment donations. Specific faculty accomplishments are listed alphabetically.
In recent years, Richard Blade's professional efforts have been increasingly devoted to motion simulation in virtual reality. He directs a research group including four other people in the design of a virtual reality motion simulator. In 1993, he received an outstanding paper award for a paper published by the Computer Simulation Society in connection with the project. The research is funded through an auxiliary enterprise that not only pays for the hardware, but supports John Matejka, his lead research associate, full time and others part time. While the purpose of the research is basic understanding of the human-computer interface, it is anticipated that the research will ultimately result in a marketable product.
James Burkhart
Robert Camley's
primary research interest has been in the fundamental properties of magnetic layered systems. This subject has been quite exciting recently, particularly in two topics phase transitions and magnetoresistance. The layered magnetic structure is a new class of material with its magnetic properties adjustable by the layering. This work has been supported by a major grant from the Army Research Office. Since 1990, Dr. Camley has authored about 40 publications in international refereed journals. He has presented 21 invited talks since 1990 including talks at Oxford and Cambridge. He has significant international collaborations with groups at the University of Essex, Cambridge University, University of Nancy, France and the University of California, Irvine among others. This year Camley received the campus Outstanding Research award.

The following are just some of these exciting cross-divisional theoretical dialogues. Many-fermion systems in nuclear physics and quantum-spin systems have several conceptual and technical similarities to many-body problems. The statistical mechanics of spin systems in two dimensions has been investigated via Landau-Ginzburg symmetry analyses and extensive Monte Carlo simulations. The phase diagram of the frustrated antiferromagnetic XY model has been elucidated, yielding a rich class of new critical phenomena. The antiferromagnetic quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg model has also been investigated using a new, efficient technique of Monte Carlo sampling.     Quantum dots, quantum wires, and heterojunction layers are of great interest for potential novel electronic devices. We studied the role of nonlinear dynamics in the transport of electrons through various mesoscopic nanostructures, including both vertical and lateral semiconductor superlattices and double-barrier resonance tunneling diodes focusing on effects created by the presence of external driving by both dc- and ac-electric and dc-magnetic fields. Our results include predicting (1) deterministic chaos in the electron current, which would appear experimentally as a substantial increase in the effective noise of the device and (2) symmetry-breaking (i.e., the development of a dc bias in response to a purely ac applied electric field or to a suitably aligned dc magnetic field). We are verifying these predictions through collaborations with several experimental groups.
