Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamical Systems
One of the two major focuses of the current research within our group is chaos in nonlinear dynamical systems. Familiar examples of this phenomenon are weak turbulence in fluid flow and the general unpredictability of the weather. However, chaos is also quite common in solid state/condensed matter systems, laser/optical systems, electronic devices, plasmas, etc., as well as chemistry, biology, physiology, economics, and many other fields. While the general goal of our research is to improve our understanding of chaos and chaotic phenomena, our current research in this area is focused on controlling or eliminating chaos. Physicists are generally interested in studying the properties of materials and devices under increasingly more extreme conditions, in which case, the nonlinear properties of the material or device become more and more important. If the conditions become sufficiently extreme, (e.g., very strong driving or very high applied fields), the behavior of the system will finally become chaotic. Beyond this point, the chaotic response of the system makes it very difficult to study its properties. However, recent research has shown that, in many cases, it may be possible to eliminate this chaotic behavior by making very small variations in the driving force or the applied field. Furthermore, the chaotic behavior may be replaced by any of a variety of steady-state or periodic behaviors. This ability to select from a variety of behaviors of the system may mean that the occurrence of chaos is actually an advantage. At present, chaos can be controlled in this manner only for very simple systems. However, we are working on ways to extend this approach to systems of much greater complexity (i.e., to the level of complexity found in real physical systems).

5 pages in length. Bernoulli's Principle, named after the Swiss Mathematician Daniel Bernoulli, provides the basis upon which air and speed equal pressure. In its most basic form, Bernoulli's Principle is responsible for establishing the inherent relationship between velocity and pressure as they relate to slow-moving air. While other principles address the issues associated with high pressure and force, Bernoulli's Principle asserts that fast moving air creates lower pressure than slow moving air. Mexican buses don't come in threes Friday 23 June 2000 Bus drivers in Cuernavaca, Mexico are giving their customers a more reliable service than their British counterparts by following quantum chaos theory. Research published today in the Institute of Physics publication, Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, describes how the people of Cuernavaca rarely say, 'you wait for hours, then three come at once', because bus drivers own their own vehicles and therefore have to compete for business. This competition means that buses do not cluster as they do in the UK, and act as a quantum chaotic system. Quantum chaos is the chaotic way sub-atomic particles are distributed in space and time.
Milan Krbalek and Petr Seba, researchers from the Czech Republic, say that this unusual distribution essentially results from bus ownership. No company is responsible for their wages, and there is no timetable either. To maximise their income, the drivers need to pick up as many people as possible, leading to stiff competition for fares. To prevent clusters of buses, drivers go so far as to employ people at checkpoints along their route to tell them when the last bus left the area. Drivers can then speed up or slow down to increase the chance of picking up more passengers.

An 8 page research paper on chaos theory, fractals, etc;. The beginnings of chaos theory are discussed briefly, citing scientists who initially made discoveries and fostered the study of chaos, e.g., Lorenz, Mandelbrot. Based on the research, a premise is put forth: if order can be found in the most complex systems, then order or patterns can be found in events thought to be without any order (animal stampedes are used as one of several examples). Prof. Leonard Kahn 's research has spanned several areas. His early work involved the study of the surfaces of solids. Specifically, he studied the chemisorption of alkalis on metal surfaces. The technique that was used was the density functional formalism. He used this formalism to study hydrogen in metals, as well as defects in metals. The main thrust of the work was to calculate the electric field gradient in these imperfect materials. His attention then changed to the study of the optical properties of one dimensional conductors, such as TTF-TCNQ. These calculations led to the investigation of acoustic plasmons in one dimensional conductors. He then tackled the problem of superconductivity in the A-15 materials, looking for an alternative mechanism to explain their high temperature transition. Prof. Chuck Kaufman works in theoretical physics, specializing in weak interactions, quantum electrodynamics, chaos, and turbulant media. Prof. Alex Meyerovich

The Statistical Mechanics and Dynamical Systems Group is conducting research in the following areas:
    • Statistical mechanics of nonequilibrium systems The study of the structure and stability of nonequilibrium steady states with emphasis upon models for the flow of mass, momentum and energy, and the calculation of thermal transport coefficients. Chaos and dynamical systems New ideas and techniques from the modern theory of chaotic dynamical systems suggest that a new fundamental conceptual basis for a theory of nonequilibrium steady states is possible. In the words of David Ruelle, we are in a phase of rapid development of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics in both general results and studies of particular models. Molecular hydrodynamics The fundamental connection between macroscopic hydrodynamics and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics is poorly understood when there is streaming or turbulent motion in the fluid. We use molecular dynamics techniques to study of fluid flow, particularly for convective flows.

    Acoustics and Sound

As one of the oldest fields of physics, acoustics may be considered "finished" by many. However, it is still an active research area with new applications of sound technologies being discovered all the time. Acoustics covers the study of and the physics of Sound, Waves, Sonic Booms, Musical Instruments, Vibrations and Speakers among many other topics. Archive of physics news stories
Collected here are the numerous physics news stories published on physics.about.com Atomic Physics - What Atoms Do
Despite being the fundamental blocks of chemistry, atoms possess an internal structure and many complicated and fascinating properties. Atomic physics encompasses many fields, from detailed study of the atom's interior to experients that trap and manipulate single atoms, to "atom lasers" - beams of atoms that have the same properties as laser light and the Global Positioning System (GPS). Biophysics
The use of physics in biology research is rapidly growing. Biologists are moving into areas of study where they need tools that are traditionally physics related - Some are using lasers to probe cell metabolism, others are using statistical mechanics to analyse the coils in DNA. Check out these sites to find out the latest in the exciting world where the physical world meets the biological.

Physics is the basic sciencethe science of matter and the interactions which affect it. Matter from the smallest of particles such as electrons and quarks, to living beings, to galaxies and the entire universe is the proper subject of Physics. The investigations of the physical world, beginning with Galileo and Newton, have formed the basis of our technological society. The twentieth century sciences of molecular, atomic and nuclear structure have dominated the national and international economic, social, and philosophical climate for over half a century. Students of physics become prepared to understand the impact that physical science has and will have on our world. Further, they are provided the knowledge and skills to either extend our understanding, or to apply that understanding to wide areas of human concern.
    The Curriculum
At Trinity, the education of a physics major begins the first semester he or she enters and continues through a carefully planned, individual program. Many students with exceptional secondary school backgrounds are able to begin their coursework at an advanced level. To better meet the individual needs and interests of its majors, the Department offers two degrees, the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).
