We are constructing and optimizing an apparatus to study Bose-Einstein Condensation, a macroscopic occupation of the quantum ground state of a system. We plan to use this as a vehicle to study ultracold interatomic collisions in 87Rb. The 87Rb atoms are first collected, cooled and confined in a dual Magneto-Optic Trap (MOT) system. They are then loaded from the second MOT into a magnetic trap and evaporatively cooled until a sufficiently high phase-space density is achieved to realize Bose-Einstein Condensation. One of the strengths of the physics and pre-engineering programs at Truman is the close interaction betwen faculty and students. Dr. Shapiro's Research Interests:
For the past 15 years my research efforts have focused mainly on molecular-dynamics simulations of ion-surface interactions. I am interested in learning more about the basic physics of atom and cluster ejection from surfaces (sputtering), collision cascades, and energy loss by atoms and clusters as they penetrate surfaces. Several undergraduate students from CSUF, Caltech, and other CSU campuses have participated in this research. Currently, CSUF graduate student Ping Lu is working with me on these projects.

Physics is the natural science that deals with the properties and interactions of matter and radiation. As such, physics provides the fundamental basis for all other sciences, and for such applied sciences as engineering and the health sciences. California State University, Fullerton, offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics which affords excellent preparation either for graduate study in physics and related areas, or for entry-level positions in industry or government. An optional business emphasis in our BS program is the first in the nation to provide training in entrepreneurship to undergraduate physics majors. We also offer the Master of Science degree in Physics . This degree, which has both an examination and a thesis option emphasizes applications, but also provides opportunities for work in basic physics and physics education. The Physics Department at CSUF offers a high degree of flexibilility in course selection and scheduling. Most required undergraduate courses are offered both during day and in the early evening, and we provide a relatively large number of upper-division elective units. This makes it possible for majors in other sciences, mathematics, engineering, or computer science to complete a second major in physics. Our graduate courses are offered primarily in the late afternoon and evening. The strength of our programs are their small class sizes and the individual attention that our faculty provides to our students. The Physics Department operates a

Programs of Study
The Department of Physics offers programs leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, and both thesis and non-thesis M.S. tracks are available. Usually a Ph.D. student devotes the first year mostly to basic courses, and takes the qualifying exam at the first January following his arrival. Students should become involved with a research project by the second year, and after passing the qualifying exam, must present the beginnings of a research project to a committee within six months. This presentation will normally turn into a dissertation, but the student is not bound to it and can switch to another project or even another area of research later.
Experimental Research
Experimental research here is in the areas of astrophysics, nonlinear phenomena and chaos, optics, optical oceanography, and solid-state physics. Theoretical research is in elementary particles, environmental optics, plasmas, nonlinear phenomena and chaos, and solid-state physics. In addition to the research projects, the activities of research groups include seminars where both visitors and the department faculty and graduate students present results of their research.

Subatomic Physics at the University of Regina
Subatomic physics is the major physics research direction at the University of Regina. Cutting edge research is performed in both experiment and theory, in collaboration with colleagues around the world. Our experimentalists perform nuclear and particle physics experiments at specialized laboratories in Canada and abroad, and bring data back to Regina for in depth computer analysis. Our theorists similarly travel to far flung research institutes for workshops, and detailed discussion. Arjendu K. Pattanayak: Research
I am trying to understand the quantum and classical dynamics of (quasi-)probabilities in nonlinear and chaotic systems. I focus on coherence and decoherence in these dynamics that is, the creation of order from randomness, and the impact of coarse-graining and noise (environmental perturbations). Recent projects include collaborations with experimentalists in atomic physics (the kicked Rydberg atom, and the Lithium 7 Bose condensate), and I am also interested in 2-d fluid dynamics experiments. One reason for focusing on probabilities is that they are a natural and powerful approach in chaos (which is inherently probabilistic) and especially so in studying quantum questions. Coherence and decoherence issues yield particularly well to analysis considering the dynamics of entropy. Entropy (and implicitly an information-theoretic perspective) is a powerful unifying concept of modern statistical physics ; these ideas seem particularly relevant to chaotic dynamics . The questions of entropy and dynamics have only just begun to be asked, understood and applied. An early thinker about chaos and entropy issues in physics is Ilya Prigogine of Bruxelles and Austin. More recent gurus are Carl Caves and Wojciech Zurek. Since entropy is closely related to local phase-space probability density (field intensity) it has more practical applications as well.
