George Washington George Washington was commander in chief of the Continental army during the American Revolution and first president of the United States (1789-97). Early Life and Career. By 1753 the growing rivalry between the British and French over control of the Ohio Valley, soon to erupt into the French and Indian War (1754-63), created new opportunities for the ambitious young Washington. He first gained public notice when, as adjutant of one of Virginia's four military districts, he was dispatched (October 1753) by Gov. Robert Dinwiddie on a fruitless mission to warn the French commander at Fort Le Boeuf against further encroachment on territory claimed by Britain. Washington's diary account of the dangers and difficulties of his journey, published at Williamsburg on his return, may have helped win him his ensuing promotion to lieutenant colonel. Although only 22 years of age and lacking experience, he learned quickly, meeting the problems of recruitment, supply, and desertions with a combination of brashness and native ability that earned him the respect of his superiors. NOAA NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER maintains a continuous watch on tropical cyclones over the Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and the Eastern Pacific from May 15 through November 30. The Center prepares and distributes hurricane watches and warnings for the general public, and also prepares and distributes marine and military advisories for other users. During the "off-season" NOAA's Hurricane Center provides training for U.S. emergency managers and representatives from many other countries that are affected by tropical cyclones. The Center also conducts applied research to evaluate and improve hurricane forecasting techniques, and is involved in public awareness programs. The Center is located on the campus of Florida International University in southwestern Dade county in Miami, Fla. Hurricane Landfall Experiment 2001 - The 2001 Hurricane Field Program is the fourth year of a renewed multi-agency effort to unravel the mysteries of these devastating storms over the next 5-6 years. The CCR collects, validates, stores and disseminates data in support of agency missions. Both current and potential government vendors are required to register in CCR in order to do be awarded contracts by the DoD, NASA, DoT and Treasury. Vendors are required to complete a one-time registration to provide basic information relevant to procurement and financial transactions. Vendors must update or renew their registration annually to maintain an active status. CCR validates the vendor's information and electronically shares the secure and encrypted data with the federal agencies' finance offices to facilitate paperless payments through electronic funds transfer (EFT). Additionally, CCR shares the data with several government procurement and electronic business systems.
