Travel By Fingertip.....Cayman Islands P oints of I nterest In C ayman I slands The real beauty and majesty of the Cayman Islands lie underneath the water: to see at a distance of 200 feet is not unusual. The spectacular coral reefs that surround the islands have been a treacherous obstacle course for ships as far back as Columbus - hence the abundance of shipwrecks. Pirate ships dominated these island waters for many centuries and the island folklore tells of their escapades. The diving is the very best, and there's good fishing too. Cayman Brac has a dramatic limestone cliff that forms to a dramatic point at the Eastern tip. Plenty of island parrots and other exotic birds await you on these two shores. Whatever aboriginal inhabitants the islands may have had left no trace of their existence. The first human known to have laid eyes on the islands was Columbus, who in 1503 spotted a swarm of turtles around Cayman Brac and Little Cayman and named the islands Tortugas in their honor. By the time Francis Drake got to Grand Cayman in 1586, the islands were commonly known as Caymanas, after a Carib word for crocodiles. For the next century or so, the Caymans were used by lurking pirates and turtle-hunting sailors, but there were no permanent settlers until the 1660s, when a couple of deserters from the British army came over from Jamaica. In 1670, the islands became possessions of the British Crown, falling under Jamaican administration. The Crown turned a blind eye to the use and abuse of the Caymans by privateers, pirates and parrots. Aside from cotton farming and turtle hunting, the major early occupation was wrecking - the practice of salvaging the remains of ships that ran aground on the islands' many reefs. The most famous of these disasters is the Wreck of the Ten Sails, which occurred when a ship struck a reef in 1794, causing a chain reaction involving nine other vessels. According to legend, the Caymanians went to such lengths to aid the shipwrecked that a grateful George III granted the islands tax-free status then and there. By 1800, the population was still under 1000, half of whom were slaves. After slavery was abolished in 1835, most freed slaves remained on the islands, and by 1900 the Caymans' population had quintupled. Cotton, mahogany, sarsaparilla and thatch rope (mostly exported to Jamaica) joined fishing, turtling and shipbuilding as the Caymans main industries until tourism and banking took the mantle during the mid-20th century.

The Cayman Island's claim to fame has always been its beautiful people, clean waters and beaches, an unassuming but obvious high standard of living (the highest in the Caribbean) (Not to mention a secure and balanced Government). If you're looking for culture, you're right in the middle of it. The Caymanian's lifestyle, past-times and customs passed down from generation to generation, all come together to make the Cayman Islands a unique experience. Cayman offers an abundance of services to residents. Social services, school grants and loans for universities both locally and abroad, sports arenas and parks. The private business sector has always been involved with the public, commonly sponsoring local sports teams and activities, as well as entering floats in the famous Batabano and Pirates Week parades. Clubs, organizations and churches enjoy the social aspect and contribute magnificently with services ranging from helping the needy to island-wide clean-up campaigns and health promotions.

INTRODUCTION

Several turtle species have been produced commercially, including the soft shell turtle, Trionyx sinensis japanicus , in Japan; the red ear slider, Pseudemys scripta elegans , and the diamond back terrapin, Malaclemmys terrapin sp. in the U.S.A.; and the green sea turtle, Chelonia mydas , in the Cayman Islands, Surinam, Reunion and Australia (Fig. 14.1) . The soft shell turtle and diamond back terrapin are cultured solely for food, the red ear slider for the pet industry, and the green sea turtle for food, leather and decorative products.
FRESHWATER TURTLE CULTURE
Historical Pond culture of the freshwater species began from the turn of the century in small systems in both Japan and the U.S.A. (Mitsukuri, 1904; and Hildebrand, 1929). Kurajiro Hattori began the culture of the soft shell turtle, or suppon, as part of a polyculture enterprise together with goldfish, carp and eel in Tokyo as early as 1875 (Mitsukuri, 1904). He later moved and expanded his operation at Shizuoka. Central Japan continues to supply the majority of the nation's farmed turtle market, although the industry is expanding to the warmer areas of southern Japan. Pond culture of the diamond back terrapin in the U.S.A. was developed along similar lines by the Bureau of Fisheries and private individuals in the early 1900's in North Carolina and Maryland. There is little commercial culture in the U.S.A. today, and most of the restaurant trade is supplied by wild-caught turtles. Pond culture of the red ear slider in Louisiana for the pet industry began in the 1960's and closely parallels the culture techniques for the terrapin and soft shell turtle.

CAYMAN ISLANDS
ANNOUNCES NEW NATIONAL SYMBOLS National Bird, Flower and Tree Selected for Their Cultural Importance GRAND CAYMAN, BWI
- 1 March, 1996 The Cayman Islands finally has an official national flower, tree and bird. M inister for Community Development and Culture Hon. W. McKeeva Bush has announced the approval by Executive Council of three national symbols for this Western Caribbean island trio. These symbols represent wild species and were selected on the basis of their inherent beauty, unique biological qualities, cultural and social importance and being representative of all three islands. E ach received the majority of 2000 ballots in last year's public poll during a national campaign conducted by the National Trust for the Cayman Islands. The people of the Cayman Islands voted overwhelmingly in favor of these three species as the symbols as most identifiable and representative of their country in those categories. T he national flower is the Wild Banana Orchid. The Cayman Islands boasts 27 species of indigenous and endemic orchids, but the best known and perhaps most distinctive is the Wild Banana Orchid which blooms in abundance after spring rains in April and May. There are actually two varieties of this orchid. The Grand Cayman variety (Schomburgkia thomsoniana) has small (about one inch long) blossoms which are predominantly white with purple lips. The variety found in the Sister Islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman (Schomburgkia thomsoniana var. minor) is yellow with lighter purple lips.

Whatever elusive treasure may lie hidden in off Cayman's coasts, the greatest tangible treasures remain the calm, clear waters, healthy reefs and abundant marine life which surround our island trio. Protecting these valuable resources has been critical to Cayman's success as a tourism destination. As one of the most popular recreational diving destinations in the world, the Cayman Islands takes pride in safeguarding the wonders of its marine environment. As a result, this Western Caribbean country has attracted attention worldwide for its leadership role in marine conservation.
During 1996, the Cayman Islands celebrated the 10th anniversary of the creation of its comprehensive Marine Parks system, which was established in April 1986 under the Marine Parks Regulations , an amendment to the Marine Conservation Law of 1978.
In response to concern and warnings about depletion of Cayman's marine resources, Government first passed the Marine Conservation Law of 1978 which created the framework for protecting the marine environment. A Marine Conservation Board , established by legislation, is responsible for administering the law.

The Cayman Islands Memory Bank: collecting and preserving oral history in small island societies
Heather R. McLaughlin
Memory Bank Coordinator
Cayman Islands National Archive
Abstract:
What is a Memory Bank? Why have the people of the Cayman Islands invested considerable time and money on one? Why is it part of the National Archive? How do you design and implement an oral history program that seeks to document the social history and traditions of a group of scattered islands? Particularly where recent development has brought rapid and dramatic changes, prompting one of our informants to say "Only three things in Cayman haven't changed: the sun, moon and stars. Everything else has changed"? And once having gathered it, how do you ensure that the information is preserved and readily accessible to the public? These are some of the questions that this paper attempts to answer. It outlines what we have done and are doing to preserve both the voices of "the unknown majority of the people" as Paul Thompson calls them, as well as that of leaders, officials, etc.
Paper:
(Please note that transparencies will be shown during the presentation of this paper) I am honoured to have been invited to speak to you this morning and to have the opportunity to tell you about the Cayman Islands Memory Bank, but before I do, I would like to briefly tell you something of our Islands and their history so that you can understand
