The population is comprised of 113 different nationalities with the majority of non-Caymanians from Britain and Jamaica . English is the primary language spoken by the great majority of people. The Cayman Islands are blessed with a number of different seafoods with turtle and conch being very prevalent among the many different dishes. Jamaican culture has also seeped into the Cayman Islands culture, as is evidence by the jerk seasonings in their meats and fishes. West Indian traditions are noticeable in the soca, calypso and reggae you'll hear emanating from locals' jeeps, clubs and bars. The Cayman's most prominent living artist is Gladwyn K Bush, an elderly painter known to most as Miss Lassie. Born in 1914, Miss Lassie didn't begin painting until encouraged by a spiritual experience in 1984. Her vibrant 'markings' (as she calls them) are mostly representations of biblical scenes as envisioned in her dreams. Miss Lassie's home on South Sound Road (ask a local for directions) is covered in paintings and is a bit of a landmark. Before he found Cayman Islands, he discovered Little Cayman and Cayman Brac during his fourth and last voyage to the New World, on May 10, 1503. While sailing from Panama to Hispaniola, he saw two very small islands, full of tortoise, they looked as much as little rocks. Consequently, Columbus named the islands, Las Tortugas after the abundant sea turtles sighted. The islands were later named Lagartos, meaning alligator or large lizard and finally, the name Caymanas was applied around 1540, derived from the Carib word for marine crocodile. This name in a modified form remained since the late 16th century.
