The Katipunan replaced the peaceful civic association that Rizal had founded.

Hurricane Lenny Kills at Least Four in Caribbean...11/19/99 By Carol Bareuther CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (Reuters) - Hurricane Lenny kept pounding northeastern Caribbean islands on Friday with heavy rains and surf but was losing strength as it prowled near Antigua. The unusual west-to-east moving storm caused at least four deaths and left a path of destruction during its three-day trek, churning up waves that smashed boats, washed away roads, scattered debris, tore at hotels and slid homes into the sea. ``It is difficult to see which way the wind is blowing from. It seems to come from all directions at the same time... The wind is blasting through our house and shrieking through the shutters,'' a resident of the British island of Anguilla said in an electronic mail communication on Friday. Lenny's sustained winds slowed to 75 mph (125 kph), just barely above the 74 mph (118 kph) hurricane threshold. But its torrential 10- to 15-inch (25 cm to 38 cm) rains were unrelenting, triggering floods and mudslides in mountainous areas. ``There's just tons and tons of water,'' a telephone operator in Anguilla said.

PREVENTING DENGUE FEVER IN TRAVELERS
Travelers may acquire dengue fever, a potentially life-threatening viral illness, during visits to tropical and subtropical countries. Dengue is transmitted by the bite of infective Aedes mosquitos which are found primarily in urban areas. This disease occurs in most of tropical Asia, the Pacific Islands, the Caribbean Islands, Central and South America, and Africa. There is generally greater risk in urban areas and less risk of dengue in rural areas and at altitudes above 1500 meters (4500 feet). Figure 1 Dengue infected regions of the World
Dengue fever and its symptoms
Dengue is characterized by sudden onset, high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain and rash. Nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, and altered taste sensation are common. A rash may appear 3 to 4 days after onset of fever and may spread from the torso to the arms, legs, and face. The disease is usually benign and self-limiting after about 7 days. Dengue may also present as a severe and fatal hemorrhagic disease, called dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). There is no specific treatment for dengue infection.

Governor Turnbull and Acting Tourism Commissioner Receive Rave Reviews for Appearance at CHA Marketplace
U.S. Virgin Islands - December 20, 1998 Last weekend's Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) Marketplace ¡99 provided the Turnbull Administration with an opportunity to meet the territory's key travel partners and members of the national travel media. An audience of about 100 members of the national travel media and tourism industry and dozens of representatives from the USVI's hotel community were in attendance at the territory's tourism press conference and VIP reception held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, January 16. Gov. Charles W. Turnbull and his Acting Commissioner of Tourism Clement "Cain" Magras were on hand to personally meet with the USVI's most influential travel partners and prospective travel partners worldwide. The highlight of the weekend's many activities was the VIP reception and destination press conference that the public and private sectors of the U.S. Virgin Islands' travel industry jointly hosted. The territory's two hotel associations worked together with the USVI Department of Tourism to help make the event an extraordinary success. Certainly the most well-received part of the evening was the speech made by Gov. Turnbull who was interrupted several times during his remarks with loud bursts of energetic applause.
