C ollectively, these articles integrate important principles and open the door to understanding important legal and business concepts. Regrettably, even some professionals only learn these realities mid-way in their career and discover that sometimes the easiest concepts offer the costliest lessons. Not unlike golf, tennis or any discipline ...bad habits are best "unlearned" at the beginning, because otherwise they will follow through the years uncorrected. To survive in the music business, whatever the then current trend, you must learn:
Lesson Number One...the song is fundamental to everything.
Those of you who resist this truism will find out sooner or later when you try to make a living in this profession.
The material we provide here is not intended to provide or be a substitute for legal counseling. Rather, our intention is to familiarize you about certain "concepts" you need to understand to connect the business of music with the creative elements of musical talent. The purpose of this web site, to my mind, is to make connection with as many of you as possible through our articles and your own follow up.

    34. Ball State Symphony Orchestra
The Ball State Symphony Orchestra (BSSO) is designed to serve students wishing to play orchestral music while at the University and who might seek careers as orchestra players and teachers.
    http://www.cs.bsu.edu/~orchcity/bsso/
Director: Leonard Atherton The Ball State Symphony Orchestra (BSSO) is designed to serve students wishing to play orchestral music while at the University and who might seek careers as orchestra players and teachers. BSSO members experience the variety of the demands placed on orchestral musicians. Repertoire is chosen from the major styles and periods of standard literature, including new and recent works. Performance activities include regular orchestral concerts, opera and choral presentations, and occasional off-campus programs. The opportunity to play in a fine orchestra is of great importance to those preparing to enter the teaching profession. The experience will serve to give those teachers concepts that can be used to make their own ensembles educationally, musically, and administratively effective. Non-majors are encouraged to participate and every effort is made to help them fit the orchestra into their schedules. It is hoped that those students who have invested much time to their school ensemble will continue their playing at the university level and beyond. Students are seated by regular screened auditions. Every opportunity is given for participants to assume a leadership position if sufficient ability is shown during auditions. The screened audition also serves a professional training function because most orchestras now hold auditions in this manner. The BSSO student will have had a number of audition experiences on a wide range of orchestral excerpts and should be able realistically to demonstrate his or her ability at professional auditions.

    CAREERS IN MUSIC
    by M. M. deCrinis
Since the beginning of recorded history, music has been an important part of human existence. Whether it be the beating of primitive drums, the wailing of an electric guitar, or the elegance of a violin concerto, music has been and continues to be an integral part of life throughout the world. Music stirs emotion, inspires peace, announces war, nourishes the hungry soul, accompanies both word and deed, and is said to have the power to "soothe the savage beast." Imagine our world without music:devoid of the magic and inspiration which it brings. A dismal vision, indeed, for music is a necessity of life; a spark igniting passion and creativity and a balm healing the wounds of humanity. Although competitive and consuming, a career in music can be immensely satisfying... if you have what it takes.
    Musicians
These talented individuals, who can create masterpieces from imagination, bring life to inanimate objects, and orchestrate sounds which delight the ear, will always be in demand. Musicians are important to the welfare of society, for music has the power to affect us psychologically, physiologically and spiritually.
