What are Ontario SPCA investigators doing for animals in zoos and aquariums?
In the year 2000, the Ontario SPCA inaugurated its Annual Zoo Inspection . There are 45 known zoos in Ontario and only seven are accredited by the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) . Throughout the year, the Ontario SPCA initiated and supervised the inspection of 27 zoos, including six accredited facilities. The inspections were conducted according to a protocol and Zoo Inspection Report developed by the Ontario SPCA.
An Ontario SPCA inspector inspects a tiger cub in an Ontario zoo. Occasionally, animals, like this tiger, are left in cages that are too small. Although the Ontario SPCA has always responded to cruelty complaints lodged against zoos, these planned inspections are new. The zoo inspection protocol requires inspectors to send a letter of introduction to local zoos, requesting that the zoo owner contact the inspector to arrange a suitable time and date for inspection. Most zoo operators are welcoming; only three operators refused inspection during 2000. However, the three were advised that the Ontario SPCA would respond to any complaints of cruelty or neglect registered against the particular zoo.

Many Canadians live in Costa Rica escaping the cold winters !!
I n order to escape Canada's cold winters, many Canadians live in Costa Rica on a full or part-time basis. It is therefore not surprising that many businesses and services catering to Canadians have been created. Canadians may stay in Costa Rica for up to 90 days without a visa, however a passport is required. E xtensions may be obtained from the office of migraciĆ³n. If you overstay your visa or entry stamp, you will have to pay a nominal fine for each extra month you've stayed. C urrently there is a Canadian Club which helps make life easier for Canadians living or planning to live in Costa Rica. By attending club meetings people can make new friendships and establish some good contacts. T his organization provides information about acquiring residency, starting a business, transferring ownership of a car, names of doctors and lawyers and will assist with purchasing medical, automobile and home insurance in Costa Rica. All Canadian visitors and residents are urged to attend. T hey meet at the King's Garden Restaurant over the Yaohan Supermarket the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 12 noon. You can find a schedule of their activities and meetings in the Tico Times.

CAPS ARCHIVE
The Canadian seal cull Protesters around the world took part in the International Day of Action Against the Canadian Seal Hunt. On 3rd May over 20 protests were held in 10 countries worldwide as part of the International Day of Action Against the Canadian Seal Hunt. Organised by grass-roots activists in three countries the Day was aimed to highlight the continuing slaughter of seals in Canada and to bring pressure on the government to halt the killing. The Canadian government had again set a massive quota for killing seals - 275,000 harp seals, 10,000 hooded seals and a few hundred grey seals. This figure however only includes those killed and brought back to shore. It doesn't include the thousands more shot at and injured but who slip beneath the ice; it doesn't include those left to rot after having their penises cut off to satisfy the Asian market for aphrodisiacs. Studies show that up to 89% of seals shot at are only wounded, and the real number of seals killed is several times the official figures. Most of the seals targeted are beaters - harp seals younger than 13 months old. Methods of killing include clubbing to death, bludgeoning with a hakapik (long-handled ice pick) and shooting. On the Day of Action groups of protesters rallied outside Canadian government offices, embassies and consulates to call for an end to the killing. The hunt has more to do with political expediency than providing any needed 'products' - there is already a huge back-pile of seal meat and fur because there is such a small market for it that 'production' is out-stripping demand.
