Derek C. Fur-Free Friday "Fur-Free Friday" is the international directory of action to protest the fur trade. This website is provided through a fur campaign partnership between CAFT (Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade) and LCA (Last Chance For Animals) in efforts to develop unity on effective strategies to destroy the economic incentive for retailers to sell fur. Canned Hunts "The Fund For Animals" has a very good website discussing the cruel and unsporting practice of canned hunts, also known as "hunting preserves," "game ranches," or "shooting preserves" where clients pay to kill animals on private land under circumstances that virtually assure the hunter of success.

Polar Bears in Mexico Circus; Province of Manitoba, Activists Appalled
By Bruce Owen, Staff Reporter, Winnipeg Free Press, Manitoba, Canada Friday, March 29, 1996
The provincial wildlife branch is investigating how at least three polar bears from Churchill ended up performing in a Mexican circus. The bears are the main attraction in the Suarez Brothers Circus which travels throughout Mexico, Central America and South America entertaining carnival crowds. The bears are trained to walk upright on their hind legs and perform tricks, such as going down a playground slide. It's believed to be the only polar bear circus act in the world. "We're not interested in seeing these bears ending up in circuses, " said Gordon Graham, legislative specialist with the branch. "It doesn't fit with our expectations of where these animals should be going." Graham added that the province will trace the paper trail of international permits needed by foreign countries to export bears from Canada. If it is found the polar bears were supplied to the circus by an agency doing business with the province, that relationship will end. "We can't undo it," Graham said, "but we wouldn't deal with them again."

controls unenforceable. A canadian animal rights group, Zooforce, recentlycompleted a survey of these polar bears in 14 foreign zoos.
    http://www.iosphere.net/~sasa/bears.htm
he October winds howl across Cape Churchill. A light dusting of snow covers the rocky landscape. The full blast of an arctic winter is just around the corner... and for this area's most famous visitors it cannot come too soon. The white bear, the polar bear. The powerful spirit of the Inuit people. "Wapusk" in the words of the native Cree. It may seem cute and cuddly, but this bear is the world's largest land carnivore. A predator. Adult males are as solidly built, as long, as heavy as a car (more than 3 meters and 600 kilograms) with front paws as big as... well, as big as a hubcap. Normally, they are solitary animals... spending long winters wandering across the frozen Arctic Ocean, short summers on land. Every fall, they come to several sites around the world to wait for winter freeze-up. Every fall, hundreds converge on Churchill, Manitoba, and on the flat cape that juts out into Hudson Bay to the east. They are photographed by wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world, and studied by scientists. Researchers have been tagging the bears here for the past 30 years to learn more about their habits and their movements. Some bears have more than one of the plastic disks attached to their ears.

representatives from the Animal Welfare Foundation of Canada, the canadian Federationof Humane Societies, the canadian Association of Public zoos and Aquaria
    http://www.awfc.ca/works--protection-of-wildlife.html
W ildlife , both in Canada and abroad, is exploited in many ways, most of which expose vast numbers of wild creatures to risk of injury, suffering, and unnecessary death. Many species are, or will become, endangered. For this reason, the Foundation has supported the general activities or specific projects of organizations designed to protect wildlife against these dangers and to generally encourage the opportunity for wildlife to live in their natural environment, free from exploitation. I n addition, the Foundation has intervened in specific wildlife problems by petitioning Governments or by providing support in other, more direct ways.
    • Arctic Wildlife

      • The Foundation expressed its concern in correspondence and meetings with representitives of the Federal Government concerning the hunting of muskox and polar bears in the Arctic. this concern led to awareness that humane organizations were needed in both the East and West Arctic. In turn this led to the formation of S.P.C.A.'s in the Yukon and Northwest Territories. The Foundation petitioned the Canadian Wildlife Service concerning the practice of the de-horning of Caribou in velvet in the Northwest Territories.
