Introduction General Section War of 1812 Northwest Campaign South African War ... About This Site
    Introduction
Desmond Morton notes in the introduction to his work entitled A Military History of Canada , that Canadians have been described as an unmilitary people. Yet, an examination of any history of Canada describes the participation of Canadians in military events ranging from rebellions within their borders to involvement in two world wars and numerous peacekeeping missions in all parts of the world. These events have clearly shaped the way Canadians view themselves and the way others view us. The published literature on Canada's military history is extensive and much of it is held in the collections of the National Library of Canada. To improve awareness of and access to this material, the Library has prepared this bibliographical pathfinder for the general reader with an interest in learning more about Canada's military heritage. Where appropriate, material of interest to genealogists and family historians has also been included. The pathfinder is a work-in-progress. Sections for other military events are planned, to be added to the site in the future.

Finally, a brief description of the site is given, including a point-form list of the headings found in that web site.
Whether your interest in Canadian military history is academic or purely for your own pleasure, it is hoped that this index can assist you in some way.
The reliability of any of the information found on these sites cannot be guaranteed. The information may also change since web sites are frequently updated, and links may no longer exist. Biography
    Current Research
His new substantive research focuses on the public debate waged by Britain's leading intellectuals, clerics and newspaper editors over the morality of the strategic air offensive against Nazi Germany. It transcends a number of traditional disciplines and examines the different perspectives involved when ethical beliefs are violently challenged by rapid changes in technology. He is a regular presenter at international strategic studies and military history conferences, and he is currently writing two papers on 'The Pragmatism of an Ethical Dimension in British Foreign Policy' and 'Learning How to Win: Anglo-American Operational Art in the Middle Years of the Second World War'. His first book, entitled: Strategy for Victory: The Development of British Tactical Air Power, 1919-1943 is to be published by Praeger in 2002. Major Publications

Interesting Fact: the famous “Red Baron”, Baron Manfred Von Richthofen, almost didn't become a pilot. It took him three attempts to pass his flying exams. He was killed on 21 April 1918 by Canadian Pilot A. Roy Brown, serving with No. 9 Squadron of the Royal Naval Air Service.
A Short History of Former and Downsized Canadian Military Bases
    The Past
Once upon a time in Canada, there was a Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Army. For those who don't know the story, between 1964 and 1968, the three service branches were merged into a single entity, "The Canadian Armed Forces", unified under a single Chief of Defence Staff and a single Defence Staff. Although there would still Army, Navy and Air Force elements, they were no longer individual entities. Navy and Army pilots became a thing of the past in Canada, as did the RCAF Marine (patrol boat) Squadrons.
