an Invaluable Tool for Local Church Ministry Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches Yearbook , prepared by staff of the National Council of Churches, also offers extensive descriptions and directories of national and regional denominational and ecumenical bodies. The 1999 Yearbook Trends essays in the 1999 Yearbook include a reflection on "American Religion at the Millennium’s End" by Gustav Niebuhr, Senior Religion Correspondent for The New York Times. Statistical charts and commentaries on a century of church growth in the United States and Canada go hand in hand with data on the continuing "flattening out" of "mainline" membership losses and "non-mainline" gains, along with evidence that giving to churches continues to increase. Yearbook also includes:
  • A new index to help churches and others identify regional and local ecumenical programs in five key areas: Interfaith Dialogue, Hunger/Food Programs, Youth Activities, Faith and Order, and Homelessness/Shelter Ministries.

Over the years, the organization has also been known as the Ecumenical Institute and the Ecumenical Forum . The Forum has played a unique role among the Canadian churches in preparing people for cross-cultural mission and ministry. The Forum counts among its members: the Anglican Church of Canada, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, the Presbyterian Church in Canada, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto, the Scarborough Foreign Mission Society and the United Church of Canada. Prime Minister of Canada
House of Commons
Ottawa, Canada K1A 0A2 26 March 2003 Dear Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, The Canadian Churches commend you and your government for remaining firm on your stand, as repeated March 17 in the House of Commons, that while Canada insists that Iraq should fully abide by the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, Canada will not participate in a war on Iraq led by the United States. Now that the war has started, we cannot but deplore the fact that the United States did not abide by international law and acted in spite of the United Nations’ opposition to war. Canada’s commitment to uphold international law is well reputed and we are proud of the fact that you have maintained a coherent position under such circumstances. As in our previous letters of September 25th, December 20th, and February 28th, we would like to emphasize again the fervent wish of Canadian Churches - indeed most Canadians - for a peaceful resolution of the current conflict, which has now evolved into a full-blown war. Thank you for your leadership on this issue.

Calgary: The Moreno family arrived from Colombia in December 2001. Colombian Christians Appeal to Canadian Churches February 20, 2002 -The doors are wide open for Canadian churches to sponsor Colombian refugees fleeing violence in their homeland. Tim Wichert, who works with the MCC Canada Refugee Program, says the Canadian government has agreed to give Colombian applications "urgent status" and will process their requests within days or a few weeks. "We need churches and communities in Canada to rise to the challenge," says Wichert. "We can help save lives in Colombia by giving refugees an opportunity to start a new life in Canada, free from fear." Colombia has been mired in civil war for over five decades. According to a letter from the Colombian Mennonite Church that was included in the November 2001 MCC "Peace Packet for Colombia", over 200,000 people have been killed and over two million people have been displaced as a result of the conflict. People caught in the crossfire or who have chosen to express their dissatisfaction with the status quo have suffered at the hands of the Colombian military, guerilla organizations and paramilitary groups. Dissidents have been assassinated, terrorized or forced to leave their homes. Sandra Diaz represents the sponsoring support group from a Spanish Mennonite church in Calgary.

[ Canadian churches cry NO to Iraq war ] September 25, 2002 Toronto : Sixteen prominent church leaders representing a broad spectrum of Canadian church denominations, as well as the ecumenical peace coalition Project Ploughshares and the inter-church justice coalition KAIROS joined together to send an today, imploring the Prime Minister to resist growing "pressure" in favour of "a new invasion of Iraq". "This is a time for intense diplomacy and face-to-face negotiations, not for missiles and high-altitude bombing. This is especially a time for multilateralism," states a joint letter signed by Bishop Jacques Berthelet, President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops; Archdeacon Jim Boyles, General Secretary of the Anglican Church of Canada and the Right Rev. Dr. Marion Pardy, Moderator of the United Church of Canada, along with leaders of fifteen other churches and church coalitions.
Churches condemn Iraq sanctions (January 2001)
The churches warn against supporting any United Nations resolution that makes it virtually impossible for Iraq to comply with demands. Such a UN resolution "would be a mere cover for an invasion that might be multinational but would still be unjust", states the letter. The Canadian church leaders explain that their decision to send a joint letter to the Prime Minister was prompted by pleas from colleagues in the Middle East to "speak and act against the threat of another war".

Prime Minister of Canada
House of Commons
Ottawa, Canada K1A 0A2 28 February, 2003 in whose days justice shall flourish, and peace, till the moon fails (Psalm 72:7). We are aware that the regime of Saddam Hussein has led Iraq on paths of violence and defiance of international standards that protect human rights and that prohibit the acquisition and use of weapons of mass destruction. This must be condemned, as must the readiness of Washington and London to resort to violence. Neither are means to sustainable disarmament and peace. We are grateful that you and your government continue to seek and support alternatives to war and to insist that decision making in this crisis must be collective, not unilateral, through the United Nations. Still, we must impress upon you at this time our firm belief that war on Iraq, even with explicit Security Council authorization, would be the worst option. In our letter of September 25, 2002, we strongly urged attention to alternatives, especially a renewal of the inspections process. We are therefore enormously heartened that, through the United Nations, the inspections process has been renewed. It represents an important part of a credible strategy and alternative to war. It appears to be making a significant impact.

AS THE MIDDLE-EAST CRISIS ESCALATES and the war on terrorism and various scandals dominate the news; as our daily newspaper and television bombard us with the latest bad news of loss, failure, death and destruction, you might be thinking: This just gets worse and worse. Can we save the human race from itself? You might then wonder: What can I do about it? What can anyone do about it? Well, you might be relieved to know that SOMETHING CAN When Lorraine Baritz of Boston was called to the hospital by friends whose 13-year-old son was in a coma and on life-support four days after a severe motorcycle accident, she knew exactly what she had to do to help. News of the recovery traveled through the hospital, reaching others standing vigil by their own children. A couple with an infant son in a coma asked for help. Again Lorraine answered the call.

http://www.incite-national.org/news/lawsuits.html
MAY 2001 Indian Lawsuits Threaten Canadian Churches By JAMES BROOKE Lawsuits filed by thousands of former Indian boarding school students in Canada, claiming sexual, physical and cultural abuse, threaten to swamp the financial resources of four mainstream Christian churches that ran the schools until 1970. "I simply see us going broke," Duncan D. Wallace, the Anglican bishop of Qu'Appelle, which encompasses Regina, said of his diocese. With resignation, he added, "When you get down to it, all we need is a bottle of wine, a book and a table, and we are in business." Anger over the schools surfaced in suspicious fires that decimated the buildings, most recently an arson attack last summer that destroyed a boarded-up building that once housed the Edmonton Indian Residential School in Alberta. According to "Sins of the Fathers," a report on the schools published by The Anglican Journal, the church's monthly newspaper, last May, eight Indian men committed suicide after they were subpoenaed to testify about their sexual abuse at the boarding school in the Cariboo diocese. "When they got handed a piece of paper, they knew their secret was out," Fred Sampson, a former student of St.George's Indian Residential School, said about friends called to testify in an abuse suit that went to trial last year. "They thought, `Everybody's going to know that I let this guy do it to me for candy.' "
