The Rural Womyn Zone Rural Women in Canada Quotable and Notable Canadian Women "I am a believer in women, in their ability to do things and in their influence and power. Women set the standards for the world, and it is for us, women in Canada, to set the standards high." Nellie McClung 1910 "The usual statement is that I am a remarkable woman because I can do it; the implication is that the average women is too dumb to succeed at a man's task - and I resent that implication, for it is false." E. Cora Hind "I believe that never was a country better adapted to produce a great race of women than this Canada of ours, nor a race of women better adapted to a great country." Emily Ferguson Murphy, First Woman Magistrate in The British Empire. "I consider it downright impertinence for a man on a farm to talk about supporting his wife. When she cooks his meals and sews and mends for him and his children from dawn until dusk, what is she doing if she is not supporting herself?" Francis Marion Beynon, 1917 E. Cora Hind 1861-1942 was world renowned as an outstanding journalist, lecturer and writer and was a foremost authority on all aspects of agriculture. "

Program for Export Market Development (PEMD) is the government's primary international business development program. The objective of PEMD is to increase export sales of Canadian goods and services by sharing the costs of activities that companies normally could or would not undertake alone, thereby reducing risks included in entering a foreign market. Other Services ITCs also provide access to the services offered by the Export Development Corporation (export financing and insurance), the Canadian International Development Agency (development-assistance contracts in developing countries) and other government agencies such as the Canadian Commercial Corporation (government-to-government contracts, including United States defense procurement). Forum for International Trade Training (FITT Inc.). FITT Inc. Provides small and medium-sized businesses with training in how to assess export readiness, develop business plans for international markets and formulate appropriate financing. FITT Inc. partners with key Canadian businesses and trade organizations to create the integrated courses. 155 Queen Street

    FROM THE PRESIDENT'S PEN (TIUM)
Hello everyone and greetings from your AAEA Executive. It is my pleasure to introduce myself as your new President for 2000-2001. I'm looking forward to an exciting year ahead, working with the Executive Committee on a variety of projects that I hope you will find valuable, such as this newsletter, our website, graduate and undergraduate scholarships, seminars, and, of course, the annual Visions conference. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to this year's Executive. Wendy Boje remains on the committee as Past-President. Dean Dyck is continuing as Treasurer, as well as being our local contact for annual conference arrangements. George Rock continues as Secretary, and Reg Norby, as a Director-at-Large, will again be exercising those unique fundraising talents for conference sponsorship. I'm also very pleased to welcome four new members to the Executive. Brenda Brindle and Dale Kaliel, both located in Edmonton, have taken on the respective roles of Membership and Newsletter. Paul Gervais, based in Olds, will be Conference coordinator for Visions 2001, and representing southern Alberta, Elwin Smith joins us from Lethbridge as a Director-at-Large. Contact details for the current Executive are listed elsewhere on this newsletter. I would like to extend my thanks to departing members of the Executive, all of whom have contributed a significant amount of time and effort to the Association. Former President, Jill Hobbs, has joined the Agricultural Economics department at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon (usually people move from Saskatchewan to Alberta, but Jill had to be different!) Also retiring from the Executive are Jim Unterschultz, former Vice-President and Newsletter editor for many years, and Allan Walburger, who along with Wendy was a key organizer of last year's conference.
