Introduction
One of the ways forward for arable farming would be to develop new outlets to the non-food industry. Many European countries efforts have been undertaken, in the last 10 years, to find or to develop new products. Most of these efforts aimed at co-operation with industry. Industry, as a whole, has an abundance of raw materials and has no immediate need to invest in technology to process and apply new agricultural feedstocks. Some sectors of industry are closely monitoring developments, or are already developing products from agricultural feedstocks, where new characteristics can be introduced and because it is profitable to shift from bulk productions to specialties. The agricultural feedstocks are often better degradable than the mineral resources and the industry is aware of the increasing demand for non-polluting production methods and products. From about 1986, research institutes and universities, in the Netherlands, entered the industrial crops and products field and strengthened the co-operation with processing industry. Multidisciplinary ventures aimed at evaluation of all links of the production-chains: from breeding, crop physiology and cropping practices to processing, applications and market studies. The first major initiative was on new technology of carbohydrates, a traditional feedstock in industry. The second was on inulin, a promising fructose polymer from chicory or Jerusalem artichoke. Next programmes were on fibres for the paper industry, new fatty acids for the oleochemical industry and carvone from caraway as biological sprouting inhibitor for potatoes. These were four-year programmes which are currently being evaluated on economic and technological feasibility.

Preventing Foot and Mouth Disease in Canada:
Basic Biosecurity Principles
Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a foreign animal disease that is endemic in many areas of the world, including several countries in Africa, as well as Asia and South America. In 2001, it was confirmed in the United Kingdom, France, The Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland, Argentina and Uruguay. The United Kingdom detected 2030 cases of FMD, slaughtered almost 4 million animals, and took 7 months to control the disease outbreak. The UK has not reported any new cases since September 30, 2001. On January 15, 2002, the British government declared the FMD epidemic to be over and lifted domestic trade bans, although it will be awhile before the international community (Office International des Epizooties- OIE) recognizes the UK to be disease-free. France, the Republic of Ireland and The Netherlands are now considered to be free of FMD, based upon assessments by the OIE and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Although FMD is not a risk to human health, it causes severe economic losses to the livestock and associated industries due to loss of export markets, as well as the costs associated with disease control, eradication and subsequent industry recovery. However, there are many other diseases foreign to Canada that have the potential to impact the health of livestock and/or humans. It is important for all travelers to take the appropriate precautions to prevent bringing these diseases into Canada. Livestock producers have a responsibility to implement biosecurity programs that will minimize the risk of their herds being infected with foreign diseases, as well as diseases endemic in Canada but not already present in their livestock.

New Hay and Feed Hotline for Prairie Farmers and Ranchers
(Winnipeg, MB. September 17th, 2002) - Canadian Foodgrains Bank and Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) announced today that a new phone service has been put in place to connect farmers who need feed and pasture with those who have surplus.
"In a series of meetings across the drought stricken area of the prairies, we were told time and time again by farmers, that they simply didn't know where to turn to for information on finding feed," said Gord Friesen, Area Director for Mennonite Disaster Services.
"Farmers are looking to connect directly with other farmers to establish fair pricing, farmer to farmer, and avoid the costs of brokerage. Many felt that with our experience in dealing with disaster responses, we could play a valuable and trusted role."
The toll-free phone line, 1-866-637-3276 (1-866-MDS-FARM), is available immediately to accept listings. Farmers and ranchers can simply call in to the phone number, which will be staffed by Mennonite Disaster Service volunteers, to either list excess hay, feed grain, straw or temporary pasture they have for sale or rent, or to list a need for one or more of these. The phone volunteers will link the farmers directly based on product and location. Pricing, actual purchase arrangements and transportation will be negotiated directly between the farmers.
"This ecumenical phone line is intended to compliment the commercial and governmental resources that are already in place," said Friesen. "Our primary goal is to assist farmers, especially cow-calf, dairy and grain/forage producers, directly connect with one another."
