Fishing and Boating
The main feature of the park, it's 1800-plus acre oxbow lake, has plenty of flooded cypress trees and a real swamp-like feel. The western portion of the lake is considered to be the best area to find crappie. Anglers looking for bass should stick to north and south ends. The lake’s three foot depth which makes it ideal for bluegill and channel catfish can also be found. Boat fishing is allowed except during waterfowl season and a 25 horsepower limit exists for all watercraft. The best fishing place is said to be right off the causeway leading to Walker Island. An Illinois fishing license is required. If you don't have a current license, see the Area Services page or buy a license online at the IDNR website Hiking Four miles of hiking trails can be found in the natural area of Walker Island. There are bird watching areas at the different habitats that can be found on the island and include a hardwood pond, old fields, grasslands, and wetlands. Camping The park's campsite is located on Walker Island in the middle of Horseshoe Lake accommodates 48 tent or trailers. An archery range, nature trail and an historic Native American mound are all located near the campsite. Amenities at this campsite include a sanitary dump station, pit toilets, and water hydrants that are all conveniently located. All campers must secure a permit from the park ranger. Reservations are accepted and prices are $11 for campsites.

Recreation in the Fraser River Basin This story is from the Greater Vancouver Book by Chuck Davis. You can find more stories from the book here
by Kim Joslin
Beautiful British Columbia, with its abundance of natural areas, provides a playground for numerous recreational activities. Each year people from all over flock to the province to enjoy leisurely pursuits in the mountains, on rivers, lakes and the ocean. But as the population grows and development pressures increase, especially in the Greater Vancouver area, this natural experience is threatened. Environment Canada, through its Fraser River Action Plan, commissioned a study in 1994 to determine the value that British Columbians themselves place on recreational experiences. The study focussed on water-based recreational activities in the Fraser River basin—on or around the Fraser River itself, its tributaries like the Nechako, Thompson, Coquitlam and Pitt rivers, its lakes and streams. Recreational activities on or around water prove to be very popular. One in four British Columbians takes part in activities such as hiking, river rafting, swimming and camping in the Fraser basin. They spend an average of 24 days per year enjoying our natural wilderness through these pastimes. In comparison to the province as a whole, even more Greater Vancouver residents take part in these activities. About one in three participate in recreational activities in the Fraser basin, averaging 22 days a year.

ALCP staff schedules several optional recreational activities each session, such as whitewater rafting and camping trips in the summer, and ski trips in the winter. In addition, shopping trips, sporting events (golf, bowling, baseball, and hockey) and several parties, dinners, and/or cookouts are often scheduled. Most ALCP activities are free of charge, but students are asked to participate financially in some of the more expensive recreational activities like the raft trips and ski trips. ALCP staff seeks students’ input in planning many of these activities. Campus Activities and Support
ALCP students may also participate in a variety of University of Idaho activities, from sporting events to student group and club meetings. They have access, free of charge, to a variety of University of Idaho facilities, including computer labs, the library, and the student health center. For a fee of $5 per week, students may use the gym and swimming pool. There are 12 active international student groups at the university that are an excellent source of support for new international students. There are also more than 50 campus clubs and organizations that welcome additional student involvement.

Recreational Vehicles and Resources
Camping is one of the most popular forms of outdoor recreation and can range from spending a night in a tent pitched in the backyard to "roughing it in the wilderness" with only limited gear to utilizing accommodations that are more modern like campers and mobile homes. Other outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, and hiking, are many times connected with camping trips. American campgrounds are designated by the National Park Service and other government entities and may require a fee if they are privately owned and reservations if they are heavily patronized. This section focuses on camping in recreational vehicles.
