History and the Temples Khmer for Travellers Map of Cambodia Safety Visas ... When to go The Great Ancient Angkor Temples
Spread around the jungle outside the town of Siem Reap, Cambodia, you will find the ruins of the great ancient Angkor temples. They are by the National Geographic considered as one of the three most important cultural attractions in the world and are also on UNESCO's World Heritage list over cultural sites that should be preserved. Many people who have never been to Angkor believe that it is only one monument. However, Angkor was the capital of the mighty Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 14th century. From here a dynasty of Khmer kings ruled one of the largest and most sophisticated kingdoms in the history of South-East Asia. The construction of the ancient capital lasted for more than 300 years leading to several changes in the architecture and also religious movements from Hindu towards Buddhism, which is still followed by more than 90 percent of the Cambodian population. Covering an area of 250 km2, and with more than 1000 archaeological sites, Angkor was made up of hundreds of buildings. Because of their links to the Gods, only the temples were considered good enough to be built in stone. The wooden structures have perished over the years, leaving only the Angkor temples to be seen today. The Siamese made repeated raids on Angkor in the 14th century, and battles continued for almost another century. After a final siege in 1431, the Khmers gradually shifted their capital southward to Phnom Pehn. Angkor was more or less abandoned to the jungle, and was pretty much forgotten in the jungle until the French explorer Henri Mouhot, in 1860, brought public attention to what many people today consider to be the eight wonder of the world.

The King commented his formal education in a Phnom Penh primary school, the Ecole Francois Baudoin. He continued his secondary education in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) Vietnam and military school in Saumur, France.
When his uncle, King Sisowath Monivong, died on April 23, 1941, the Crown Council selected Prince Sihanouk king of Cambodia. He was crowned in September 1941.
After World War II and into the early 1950s, king Sihanouk developed more of a nationalist approach and began demanding that the French leave the country. He went into exile to Thailand in 1952 and refused to reenter Cambodia until it was independent. He returned when Cambodia was granted full independence on November 9, 1953.
In March 1955, he abdicated in favor of his father. A few months later he became the prime minister. At the death of his father in 1960, Prince Sihanouk was elected head of state. He held this position until he was overthrown in a coup in March 1970. After the coup Prince Sihanouk fled to Beijing and organized forces to resist the Lon Nol government in Phnom Penh. When the Khmer Republic fell to the Khmer Rouge in April 1975, Prince Sihanouk became the head of state. Within a year he forced out of office and went into political retirement. The Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia in December 1978 and ousted the Khmer Rouge.

Cambodian History and Personal Stories Ancient Cambodia Chhun Ly Chhun Ly 's Story in Historical Context ... Today

Ancient Cambodia
The movement of the Khmer people before they came to Cambodia is not clear. By 800 A.D., there were large numbers of Cambodians living in the area surrounding the Tonle Sap or "Great Lake." They lived on the rice and fish of the area. There were probably more Khmers there at that time then there are people in all of Cambodia today. They were hardworking and clever and their rulers became very powerful. The years 802-1431 A.D. in Cambodian history were called the Angkor Period. During that time, the Khmer kings ruled over one of the largest regions in all of Southeast Asia. Many different kings ruled during the Angkor Period, and most of them were very religious. Their Hindu religious rituals were very important to the people and to the culture, and it was these beliefs that made the Khmer kingdom so powerful. A Khmer king could associate himself with a particular Hindu god, and then, construct a huge, pyramid-like temple to honor the god, and himself. Eventually this would serve as the king's tomb. So Angkor, therefore, can be described as a succession of "king-cities" where each king built his own monument, and then moved the capital there.

Royalty in Cambodia
At the start of the 20th century, Cambodia was a French protectorate. The current king, Norodom Sihanouk, was elected by a royal council in 1941. In 1953, after France refused to grant Cambodia's independence, Sihanouk chose to go into exile. In 1955 he abdicated, but he remained active in Cambodian politics and eventually became head of state. After being ousted in a coup in 1970, the king joined forces with a rebel group, the Khmer Rouge, who seized power and made Sihanouk their head of state. He was eventually placed under house arrest by the regime. Over 1 million people died during the Khmer Rouge's brutal reign. Sihanouk went into exile in 1981 but returned in 1991 after the Khmer Rouge signed a peace treaty with opposing groups. In 1993 Cambodia once more became a constitutional monarchy with Sihanouk as king.

Cambodian History Cambodia has a very long and fascinating history. No written hisitory gives a complete account of where they came from and what they did. According to ancient legends, a Naga prince and princess were teh ancient ancestors of the Khmer kingdom which was originally a Hindu settlement. By the 600's AD, the Khmer had begun to establish a vast empire throughout Southeast Asia. It was during the years of the empire that the famous temples such as Angkor Wat were built. As the empire began to deteriorate, the Khmer people struggled with conflict with neighboring peoples like the Vietnamese. Eventually, Cambodia, along with the rest of the people in the region became a colony of France and part of French Indochina.. Cambodia gained independence from France on November 9, 1953. The capital city was established in Phnom Penh, and Cambodia re-established their ancient monarchy. Governing a nation has not been easy, and the country has faced many changes in government and many difficult times. The most dramatic of these times has been during the 1970's when the country was controlled by a group of radical Communist guerillas called the Khmer Rouge. This was an extremely violent, bloody time in history, and many innocent Cambodians lost their lives. Cambodia has been restored to a Constitutional monarchy , but Communism still influences the government in many ways. http://www.phnompenhpost.com/TXT/comments/how2.htm
back to headlines COMMENT How to slice a century of Cambodian history By David Chandler
As far as Cambodia is concerned, the century just ending can be fruitfully described in several ways. An unpromising approach would be to cut the century more or less in half, with fifty-four years labelled "the colonial era" and the rest "Cambodia since independence."
A better approach would be to see Cambodia gradually emerging into a wider, largely indifferent world, buffeted by a succession of foreign influences, starting with France, continuing through a period of haphazard but brutal American interference followed by stretches of Chinese and Vietnamese Marxism-Leninism before "ending" in 1999 with an ex-Communist government facing the amorphous challenges of globalization.
A final approach to Cambodia's history in the 1900s, unpalatable to an historian, is to suggest that as Cambodia emerges into Southeast Asia and as Southeast Asia enters the world, Cambodia is losing the capacity to generate its own history. What had been in some sense an island or a village is being submerged in a global ocean, affected by global changes in climate, population, culture and economics over which no one in Cambodia has any control. Seen from this perspective, as from the third, "Cambodian" history as it has been constructed and written about in the past may be coming to an end, as "Cambodia" loses parts of its former meaning.

COMMENT Aging Khmer Rouge living in denial By Michael Hayes
"History remains history that cannot be changed."
- Prime Minister Hun Sen, April 10, 2000
Submitted by the PM in response to the Post's request for a written statement with his reflections and thoughts on the 25th anniversary of the fall of Phnom Penh.
APRIL 17, 2000 marks the 25th anniversary of the day the Khmer Rouge marched into Phnom Penh and toppled the Lon Nol regime. More importantly, it dates the beginning of Pol Pot's three year, eight month and twenty day reign of terror, a period during which more than 1.7 million-and perhaps many more-Cambodians lost their lives by execution, disease or starvation.
When the KR cadre trundled into Phnom Penh a quarter of a century ago, most of the 2 million-plus, war-weary residents of the capital breathed a sigh of relief. They were wrong to do so.
The tragedy that ensued defied the notion that so-called communists cared about the costs it would take to develop a new society.
Pol Pot, who told American reporter Nate Thayer he had no regrets for his actions, dealt Cambodia a near-death body blow. It's not hard for even a casual observer to now agree that Pol Pot's DK insanity was one of the worst chapters in Cambodian history in the last 600 years.
