History
Azerbaijan has been inhabited for at least 3000 years, and probably a lot longer than that. Bronze Age settlements have been found in and around Baku. Scythians settled in the area in the 9th century BC, followed by the Medes, followers of Zoroastrianism. The Archaemenid Persians took over half the country 200 years later, only to be absorbed by the Greeks in 330 BC. Beginning in the 1st century AD, the area came under the control of the Romans, though after the 3rd century the Persians came back into the picture. Arabs had control by the 11th century, but Seljuk Turks displaced them, laying the foundation of modern Azerbaijan. Beginning around 1050, the country enjoyed a cultural renaissance that witnessed many of its greatest architectural and artistic achievements. A three-way struggle between Russia, Turkey and Persia ended in 1813, when Russia and Persia divided Azerbaijan along the Aras River. During the period of Russian rule, Azerbaijan's economy grew in relation to Russia's. Azerbaijan provided the Soviet Union with crude oil, chemicals, textiles, food and wine. While its days as a Soviet supplier dwindled its petroleum supply, Azerbaijan remained a healthy producer of crude oil and textiles throughout the 20th century. Azerbaijan had a brief taste of independence between 1918 and 1920, but was lumped by the Soviet Union into a 'federated republic' with Armenia and Georgia in 1922. In 1924, the USSR created the autonomous province of Nagorno-Karabakh, which at that time was virtually all Armenian (and thus Christian), inside the Azerbaijan Republic, placing it under Azeri rule. The Soviets dissolved the federated republic in 1936 but held the three republics within its orbit. After the brief Soviet occupation of northern Iran during WWII, the Iranian government crushed the nascent independence movement that had been started there by ethnic Azerbaijanis.

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... AZERBAIJAN This ancient region has been occupied by a variety of peoples including the indigenous nomadic Azeris, as well as Persians, Muslims, Arabs, Turks, Mongols, and Russians. Because of its geographic location, the capital Baku has been important in controlling the Caspian Sea. Though the Persians, Ottomans, and Russians wrestled with each other for hegemony over the area during the 18th and 19th centuries, it was the Russians who eventually gained the upper hand through the Treaty of Turkmenchai (1828), which gave them the northern part of the land. Persia got the southern half. The Russians transformed Azerbaijan into an industrial center. It also became a revolutionary center. Though the first republic established in 1918 was overthrown in 1920 by the Soviet Red Army, a separate Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic did come into being. During the period under Soviet domination, the country underwent industrial growth, collectivization of agriculture, and religious persecution. In 1988, Azerbaijan went to war against neighboring Armenia over the Naborno-Karabakh region (ethnically Armenian, but within Azerbaijan territory). The ensuing hostilities continue. With the fall of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan has had difficulties with issues of democracy as it tried to hold free and honest elections in 1995 and 1998. Charges of vote-rigging persist and officials sent to monitor the elections of 1998 charged that there were serious irregularities in the process.

Brief History of Azerbaijan Republic Azerbaijan is one of the oldestspots of civilization, a country with rich and ancient history.

Brief History of Azerbaijan Republic Territory: 86.6 thousand km
    Population: 7,631,600 (on January 1, 1998)
Capital: Baku 20 percent of the territory of Azerbaijan is occupied as a result of the aggression of Armenian military troops and more than million people became refugees and displaced persons.
Azerbaijan is one of the oldest spots of civilization, a country with rich and ancient history. A rich cultural heritage has been created on its territory over the span of many millenniums, contributing to the treasure - house of World culture. The discovery of Azykh cave, the earliest habitation of man to be found in the world, and a number of habitations of the ancient stone age prove that Azerbaijan enters the zone of anthropoids to reveal the birthplace of mankind. Azerbaijan was conquered by Arabs at the beginning of the 8th century and made part of the Arab Khalifat as the vilayet Arran. Islam became the leading religion in Azerbaijan, creating new traditions and culture. Azerbaijanis like all other nations that accepted Islam, were called "Muslims" and participated in the development of Muslim culture. Azerbaijan enriched the world culture, gave the world a brilliant gallery of scientists, poets and architects. In the medieval centuries there was a succession of states: Qaraqoyunly, Aghqoyunlu, and Sefevids states were in power in a successive way.

DOCTOR TÜBINGEN UNIVERSITY (STUTTGART, GERMANY) THE SPANISH LEVANTE ROCK-ART COMPARED TO THE GOBUSTAN ART The present paper is divided into two parts: the first one deals with the main characteristics of the Levante rock shelter art including a glance to the preceeding Paleolithic Franco-Cantabrian cave-art. The second part tries to establish differences from and similarities with the Gobustan rock-art. The Levante rock-shelter art differs from the Franco-Cantabrian art in many aspects the most important of which are the following: The drawings of the Levante art are found on steep rock-shelters exposed to the sun whereas the Franco-Cantabrian art is always located in caves mostly far inside and well hidden from sun and weather. Another important different lies in the subject matters - those of the cave-art are with the exception of some "shamans" and hand-printings, huge animals, whereas in the Eastern Spanish rock-shelter art human figures and their activities are the most important subjects.[1]

Republic from the lands of former Irevan khanate and territories ( Goyche and Zangezur) which were transferred to Armenia from Azerbaijan Democratic Republic
    http://mrashid.home.cern.ch/mrashid/history.html
There are plentiful of proves that the area of former Irevan khanate (kingdom) ( Armenian Republic at present ) were populated mostly by Azeris in the past. If we just consider the 19 century, not even earlier... With the help of Russians, who were tried to establish their control over Caucasus by means of the massive relocation of Armenians from the Turkish and Persian empires to the Causasus, the ethnic population of these lands started to getting change. These initiatives of Russians were explicitly documented in the Gulistan ( Treaty of Gulistan 12.10.1813 (Russo-Persian War 1804-13 ) and Turkmanchay (1928) peace accords. Later these actions of forceful expel of the local Azeris out and settle of the Armenians in, were described in many Russian sources. The creation of Armenian Republic had taken place only when the communists came to a power in the Russian Empire, then forming the Armenian Republic from the lands of former Irevan khanate and territories ( Goyche and Zangezur ) which were transferred to Armenia from Azerbaijan Democratic Republic ( ADR ) by sordid acts of Soviet Bolsheviks. Apparently not fully satisfied with ethnic cleansing of Azeris in the past, Armenians, again with the help of Russians ( in the form of the Soviet Union this time ), have continued of the ethnic cleansing of former Azeri lands by expelling more than 250.000 Azeris from various parts of Armenian Republic soon after World War II. Another forceful flow of Azeris ( more 200.000 ) from Armenia occurred during Upper Karabakh ( also known in the West in a ugly misspelled name of "Nagorno-Karabakh" ) conflict in 90's.
