Founded in 1965 by R. John Rath, the Austrian History Yearbook remains the only English-language journal devoted to the history of the territories in Central Europe that were formerly under Habsburg rule and now comprise the modern states of Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and parts of Italy, Poland, Ukraine, Romania and Serbia. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the search for stability in the former East bloc has brought an upsurge of interest in the region's Habsburg heritage. Typically, each issue of the Yearbook contains five to six fully peer-reviewed articles, a forum on an important historical issue, a review article, and 30 to 40 book reviews. Two recent articles have won prestigious prizes awarded by affiliate societies of the American Historical Association: Karl Bahm's on "Rethinking Nation, Culture, and Modernity in Nineteenth Century Central Europe" and Alice Freifeld's on "Marketing Industrialization and Dualism in Liberal Hungary: Expositions 1842-1896." Editor: Charles Ingrao , Professor of History, Purdue University Executive Editor: Gary B. Cohen

Our lectures on history, art, literature and politics give deep insight into Austrian and German-language culture. Who, for instance, was Emperor Franz Josef ? Most will answer: a Habsburg emperor in the 19th century and the husband of Empress Sissi , of course! But those wanting to find out more about these two most popular and prominent Austrian celebrities simply have to attend Mario’s lecture! It goes without saying that Sissi fans are also treated to showings of the films starring Romy Schneider. One of our century’s most important art movements was, for certain, Jugendstil. Egon

Leonberger History Austria Everybody has of course heard of the Austrian Empress "Sissy"
who is said to have owned 7 Leonberger dogs. But even if Empress "Sissy" was surely the most famous
Austrian Leoowner, the Austrian History is more than that.
This is out of the "Kynologisches Jahrbuch 1898" Austria;
the article refers to dog-breeding in generally. This article refers to Leonberger breeding - 1908 - 1913 -
in Germany, Austria and Böhmen
(which belongs today to Poland / Czechy) Breeding must have taken place in Austria end of the 19th century
(maybe earlier) as in the Leonberger Chronik several
Leo's listed by name - and this list is out of the magazine
"Hundesport & Jagd", dated Aug. 19, 1897.
Especially the Leo Abdel Rigo Austria is most likely an Austria Leo. One of the old "Leonberger" magazines reported about the dog show Vienna 1911. 7 Leonberger dogs out of the breeding from Baronin Pfungen, Gars, Niederösterreich; attended that show.

Austrian history: Habsburg dynasty
Bella gerant alii, tu felix Austria nube!
The rise of House Habsburg! This line of medieval poetry is representative of the rise of the Habsburg Empire. It was written in the late Middle Ages at the same time when the Habsburgs transformed themselves from insignificant Swiss Counts to Holy Roman Emperors of German Nation. They were one of the most powerful dynasties of Ancient Europe.
Rudolf von Habsburg - the 13th century
But we will come to this later! Let's start at the beginning:
In 1273 the kurfuersts (a number of counts responsible for electing the German emperor) had finally come to a decision: they had elected the rather negligible Swiss count 'Rudolf von der Habichtsburg' (Habsburg!) on the strength of his very insignificance. By this they expected to lose as little power of their own as possible.
However, their hopes were to be disappointed. Already in 1278 Rudolf defeated his mightiest opponent
