THE SCULPTURE: DAVID
As I said, the marble had been flawed and distorted by Simone, and in some places Michelangelo could not work it as he wanted; so he allowed some of the original chisel marks made by Simone to remain on the the edges of the marble, and these can still be seen today. And all things considered, Michelangelo worked a miracle in restoring to life something that had been left for dead. ...And without any doubt this figure has put in the shade every other statue, ancient or modern, Greek or Roman...The legs are skillfully outlined, the slender flanks are beautifully shaped and the limbs are joined faultless to the trunk. The grace of this figure and the serenity of its pose have never been surpassed, nor have the feet, the hands, and the head, whose harmonious proportions and loveliness are in keeping with the rest. To be sure, anyone who has seen Michelangelo's David has no need to see anything else by any other sculptor, living or dead.

    (b. 1475, Caprese, d. 1564, Roma)
    Biography
Michelangelo (1475-1564), arguably one of the most inspired creators in the history of art and, with Leonardo da Vinci, the most potent force in the Italian High Renaissance. As a sculptor, architect, painter, and poet, he exerted a tremendous influence on his contemporaries and on subsequent Western art in general. monument in the church of Santa Croce. Early Life in Florence Michelangelo's father, a Florentine official named Ludovico Buonarroti with connections to the ruling Medici family, placed his 13-year-old son in the workshop of the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio. After about two years, Michelangelo studied at the sculpture school in the Medici gardens and shortly thereafter was invited into the household of Lorenzo de' Medici, the Magnificent. There he had an opportunity to converse with the younger Medicis, two of whom later became popes (Leo X and Clement VII). He also became acquainted with such humanists as Marsilio Ficino and the poet Angelo Poliziano, who were frequent visitors. Michelangelo produced at least two relief sculptures by the time he was 16 years old, the Battle of the Centaurs and the Madonna of the Stairs (both 1489-92, Casa Buonarroti, Florence), which show that he had achieved a personal style at a very early age.

    Introduction
The novel The Apprentice introduced you to the life of Arduino as an apprentice painter in Renaissance Florence. This appsgivity will lead you to a better understanding of the lives of two artists from the Renaissance. You will also appreciate the art these two men created. With your teacher, please review your school's acceptable use policy for work on the Internet. Also, links to the web often change. Tell your teacher when you find a poor link in this guide.
    The Task
You will be an art critic and fictional advisor to the Medici family. Research the artists Michelangelo and da Vinci at the sites below. Based on your research of the artists and their works, write a persuasive essay advising the Medici's whom they should commission to produce a painting at their new villa. Art historians often think of Michelangelo as a sculptor who painted, while da Vinci was a true painter. Leonardo thought that painting was the purest form of artistic expression, while Michelangelo preferred carving statues. While both men were very versatile -sculptors, architects, poets, and painters- only Leonardo was interested in science. Leonardo saw himself and mankind as a part of nature; to be studied and understood. Michelangelo saw man as unique and godlike. Leonardo calmly observed nature and tried to represent it in his drawings and paintings. Michelangelo deemed himself a creator whose hands were to miraculously bring dead materials to life.

Renaissance Art Game combines learning and fun by Robyn Israel Michelangelo is famous for painting the Sistine Chapel. But most people probably don't know that he greatly preferred carving sculptures, and once commented that painting was "women's work." This little-known fact is revealed in the Renaissance Art Game, a new card game developed by Palo Altan Wenda O'Reilly, with the assistance of her three adolescent daughtersAhna, Noelle and Marieleand their friend, Erin Kravitz. The game includes a deck of 30 playing cards and a full-color 80-page art book, packaged in a beautiful Renaissance treasure box. Children play "Go Fish" and "Concentration"-style card games with the art cards, which feature the works of six Renaissance artists: Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Botticelli and Fra Angelico. Each artist's group of cards is color-coded, and each card in the deck has a two-page spread in the companion book (the book is not needed, however, to play the game). Released in October, the game sold 4,000 copies in the first two weeks. O'Reilly credits the success to the fact it is essentially a game kids already know"Go Fish"which doesn't have complicated directions.

    Michelangelo Buonarroti
Michelangelo Buonarotti lived during the height of the Renaissance. He was considered a genius even during his lifetime, and was constantly urged to accept commissions. He was a gifted painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and poet. His preference was sculpture and his figures are noted for their striking power and dramatic expressiveness.
    "The Pieta (marble sculpture)"
    "The Holy Family"

With his preference to sculpture, Michelangelo once said, "Nothing was right with me unless I had a chisel in my hand." He styled his sculptures after the works of the ancient Greeks. He, like them, wanted to capture ideal beauty in each figure. Michelangelo's figures are noted today for their striking power and dramatic expressiveness. He had tremendous ability to draw the human form with near perfect accuracy.

Available from http://www.BirdcageBooks.com or Homeschool Christian’s Barnes and Noble Links: Impressionist Art Game Renaissance Art Game The Impressionist Art Game and The Renaissance Art Game from Birdcage Books combine beauty with learning to make art appreciation studies fun. Each set, packaged in an attractive and sturdy box, contains a deck of cards with works of great artists and an 80- page paperback book full of history and background on the art, artists, and the time in which they lived. The cards, miniature copies of great works, allow children and adults to play "Go Fish" or "Concentration." Each of the slick card stock cards has the name and the number assigned in the game to the artist, a work, the name of the work, and the names of all of the artist’s other works included in the set. Some of the pictures were partially cut away in order to fit on the card. The books begin with a brief history of the era, a time line, and a short biography of each artist. The stature of artists, the funding of the arts, the general direction of art at the time, and some artistic techniques are also discussed. Printed on slick heavy paper, the texts have larger pictures of the art than those on the cards and include detailed descriptions, additional reproductions, and magnified highlights from selected prints. The historical information is arranged in newspaper style columns with headlines that allow one to skip around to the tidbits of interest. Because the book and card deck fit snugly into the box, a red ribbon is used to lift them out.

    MICHELANGELO BUONAROTTI
There are few artists today who have such name recognition that a full name is not necessary. Along with artists such as Leonardo, Picasso, or Van Gogh. Michelangelo was such an artist. Considered to be one of the greatest artists of all time, Michelangelo Buonarotti created sculptures and paintings of gigantic proportions in terms of scale and importance. His sculpture of David and his covering of the ceiling of Cistine Chapel in the Vatican forever placed him among the greatest artists of all time. Born in the small Italian village of Caprese near Florence on March 6, 1475, Michelangelo was a younger contempory of such people as the explorer Christopher Columbus and great artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci. His time was of a new age of enlightenment where artistic and inventive freedom was beginning to come back into the forefront. After losing his mother at an early age, Michelangelo moved to Florence with his father and four brothers where his father had a minor but influential government job as an official. His father noting his intelligence and talent placed the 13 year old Michelangelo in the apprenticeship of the painter and sculptor, Domenico Ghirlandaio. By age 16 he had moved in with the ruling Medici where he developed a friendly relationship with two future Popes and had begun his artistic life. Some of Michelangelo's greatest achievement parallel important developments in his life. His sense of local patriotism inspired one of his grandest and most noted works, the gigantic statue of David which he carved between 1501 and 1504. It was done to inspire the people of Florence who were at the time, facing adversity from outside threats to the city. The Biblical character of David was a symbol to the people of the weak with God's help fighting the Goliath-like forces who were threatening the city.
