4. Deanna's World: Reflections Of The Renaissance
Underlines the creativity of the Renaissance by including artwork, literature, historical facts, and specific biographical information. Featured artists include leonardo da vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael.
http://www.dworldonline.com/ren.htm
The Renaissance was an era of beautiful artwork and structures which flourished all over western Europe. Although it began in Italy where there was always a residue of classical-styled architecture, it might have been expected to appear first in Rome. During the 14th and early 15th centuries, however, Rome's political situation was very unfavorable for artistic endeavor, unlike that of Florence.
The early Renaissance in Rome was rapidly approaching the simplicity, monumentality, and massiveness of the High Renaissance of the early 16th century. It renounced the exploits of the Medieval master-mansions, and defined beauty as fidelity at the expense of all other considerations. Some of the most noted artists, architects, and sculptors of the High Renaissance include Donato Bramante, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael.
In essence, the Renaissance was a time period in which stunning sculptures, buildings, and artwork flourished all over western Europe. It was one of the high points of humanism and the expression of creativity and beauty of life. Renaissance paintings "The heavens often rain down the richest gifts on human beings, but sometimes they bestow with lavish abundance upon a single individual beauty, grace and ability, so that whatever he does, every action is so devine that he distances all other men, and clearly displays how his greatness is a gift of God and not an acquirement of human art. Men saw this in Leonardo." Georgio Vasari (1511-1574) (author of ' The Lives of The Artists DATES Born in or near Vinci, Italy

Leonardo da Vinci Leonardo DA VINCI (b. 1452, Vinci, Republic of Florence [now in Italy]d. May 2, 1519, Cloux, Fr.), Italian painter, draftsman, sculptor, architect, and engineer whose genius, perhaps more than that of any other figure, epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. His Last Supper (1495-97) and Mona Lisa (1503-06) are among the most widely popular and influential paintings of the Renaissance. Leonardo da Vinci
was born in April 15, 1452 in Vinci, Italy. Leonardo's mastery in art, science and engineering have earned him a place among the most prolific geniuses of history. He was one of the most important artists of the Italian Renaissance, a period when the arts and sciences flourished. At age 17, Leonardo and his father moved to Florence, where he apprenticed to Verrocchio. His brilliance soon eclipsed that of his master. In 1472 Leonardo became a member of the painter's guild of Florence, where he had contact with other great Florentine artists including Michelangelo Buonarroti In 1481 Leonardo left Florence for Milan to offer his service to the local Duke. During this period he painted the Virgin of the Rocks and the Last Supper . In 1499 Leonardo left Milan, traveling through Mantua, to the court of Isabella d'Este; to Venice, where he consulted on architecture from 1495 to 1499; and in 1502 and 1503 was military engineer for Cesare Borgia. After his service to the Borgias, Leonardo returned to Florence. It was during the period between 1503 and 1506, while working primarily in Florence, that he had his greatest following and painted such classics as the "Mona Lisa." Leonardo left Florence for Milan in 1506, although he returned in 1507-8 to fight for his inheritance from his Uncle. In 1509 he returned to Milan and devoted much of his time to scientific studies, and to engineering projects such as channeling the course of the Adda river. In 1512 Leonardo left Milan again, and from 1513 to 1516 was in Rome under the protection of Giuliano de Medici, the brother of Pope Leo X. Here Leonardo came into contact with Michelangelo, and another young rival, Raphael.

    La Joconde
Portrait of Mona Lisa (1479-1528), also known as La Gioconda , the wife of Francesco del Giocondo; 1503-06 (150 Kb); Oil on wood, 77 x 53 cm (30 x 20 7/8 in); Musee du Louvre, Paris This figure of a woman, dressed in the Florentine fashion of her day and seated in a visionary, mountainous landscape, is a remarkable instance of Leonardo's sfumato technique of soft, heavily shaded modeling. The Mona Lisa's enigmatic expression, which seems both alluring and aloof, has given the portrait universal fame. Reams have been written about this small masterpiece by Leonardo, and the gentle woman who is its subject has been adapted in turn as an aesthetic, philosophical and advertising symbol, entering eventually into the irreverent parodies of the Dada and Surrealist artists. The history of the panel has been much discussed, although it remains in part uncertain. According to Vasari, the subject is a young Florentine woman, Monna (or Mona) Lisa, who in 1495 married the well-known figure, Francesco del Giocondo, and thus came to be known as ``La Gioconda''. The work should probably be dated during Leonardo's second Florentine period, that is between 1503 and 1505. Leonardo himself loved the portrait, so much so that he always carried it with him until eventually in France it was sold to François I, either by Leonardo or by Melzi. From the beginning it was greatly admired and much copied, and it came to be considered the prototype of the
