Background Activities
Activity One
The purpose of this activity is to encourage students to explore the great variety of animal behaviors by observing their own environment.
1. Take the students outdoors for twenty minutes to record observations of animal behavior. Have them focus on the kinds of animals they see and the kinds of behaviors they observe.
2. Have the students share the results of their observations with the entire class. Create a class chart entitled "Animal Behaviors" based on what the students saw. Use this chart as a shared reference throughout the remainder of the lesson activities.
Activity Two
The purpose of this activity is to encourage students to examine the relationship between people, animals, and the environment.
1. Obtain a copy of the book FAREWELL TO SHADY GLADE by Bill Peet. This children's picture book describes what happens to animal habitats when development occurs. 2. Ask the students to choose an animal character and write a letter from that character's perspective regarding the situation at Shady Glade. 3. Have each student read the letter aloud to the class. Discuss the following questions:

A sperm whale is 50 feet long and can dive up to 1.9 miles deep. Using this ratio of length vs. diving depth, how deep could you dive (hypothetically) using you height?

    • Read background information about animals unique to Australia from library sources or printed from Animals Australia to students.
    • Distribute construction or drawing paper and drawing materials. Tell students that each person will create one page of a picture book about animals that live in Australia. Assign each student one letter of the alphabet. Tell students that the animal they choose must begin with their assigned letter.
