Culture
Anguilla's West Indian culture is a blend of British and African influences. Because of the dry and barren nature of the island, the small population on Anguilla has traditionally struggled to make ends meet and has looked toward the sea, in the form of fishing and boatbuilding, for its livelihood. One consequence of this seafaring heritage is a penchant for boat racing. Aside from the boxy modern buildings in The Valley, visitors will notice that the predominant architectural style on Anguilla is unfinished concrete. Many Anguillians work abroad and return home periodically to make piecemeal additions to their property as their earnings permit, leaving foundations and unfinished walls scattered about the island.

Anguilla: Culture and History Anguilla is a small West Indian island that is still a member of the British Crown colony. It is the most northerly of the British Leeward Islands and it is about thirty-five square miles in area. It has The Valley as its capital, which is in the middle of the island. The native language of the Anguillans is English. The island has recently been developing its tourist industry, as prior to that, the island had no visitor facilities. There was a government decision to invest in the facilities as the island has some of the finest beaches in the Eastern Caribbean.

Anguilla's Culture
Anguilla’s history is embodied in the island’s culture and heritage. From the ancient Amerindian settlements and European colonization to its recent 1967 Revolution, these and other events are woven into the tapestry of Anguilla’s life that is passed on with pride from generation to generation. Holidays and festivals are centered on historical events. Anguilla’s most spectacular display of culture is the Summer Festival, beginning August Monday at 5AM with J’Ouvert Mornin,’ a daybreak jam through the streets to celebrate emancipation. Nearly two weeks of dancing, competitions, fairs, costumes and parades color the evenings. During the days, as with almost all of Anguilla’s major holidays, the island is filled with the excitement of beach picnics and boat racing, Anguilla’s national sport. The Anguilla community is peaceful and joyous. The island is largely Christian in denomination with nearly one church for every two square miles. English holidays such as the Queen’s Birthday, Whit Monday and others are celebrated, but English speaking Anguilla maintains a unique balance all of its historic influences that make this island a truly individual nation.

Introduction
Anguilla, the most northerly of the British Leeward Islands, retains the laid-back character of a sleepy backwater. It's small (just 35 sq mi/91 sq km) and lightly populated, but the islanders are friendly and easy going. It also has some of the finest beaches in the Caribbean. Anguilla had almost no visitor facilities just a decade ago, but it made a decision in the 1980s to develop tourism with a slant toward luxury hotels and villas. It has since become one of the trendier top-end destinations in the Eastern Caribbean. The interior of the island is flat, dry and scrubby, pockmarked with salt ponds and devoid of dramatic scenery. Anguilla's main appeal to visitors are its beautiful fringing beaches, aquamarine waters and its nearby coral-encrusted islets, which offer great swimming, snorkeling and diving. Inexpensive ferries shuttle between Anguilla and bustling St Martin, making Anguilla easy to visit as a day trip. Area: 60 sq mi (155 sq km) (includes several smaller islands)
