page summary
A century of debate between proponents of traditional and progressive teaching approaches may have missed the point. The important meanings we want students to learn should drive the methods we use to teach them. Teaching should focus on meaningful understandings of the kind that expand students' knowledge of the world they inhabit, not on facts that have little relevance beyond their own limited context. Effective teachers seek a harmonious balance between teaching approaches; they use what works. Meaning should be embedded in the body of knowledge taught to students. Teaching activities are the strategies that implement the body of knowledge: they are the tools that construct meaning. It shall be the continuing mission of this web site to ask teachers what meaningful understandings students should have, and what activities are most effective in conveying them. 2003 Michael G. Maxwell

Teacher Resources: Essays on the Impact of Technology in the Classroom

Overview
The integration of technology into the classroom, particularly the Humanities classroom, is a complex topic, resulting in a myriad of policy discussions initiated by teachers and scholars alike. The essays listed below are intended to ease you into the language, the arguments, and the critiques of technology and its role in education in our humanities classrooms. While these essays are certainly not required reading, a browse now and again will give you enough credible background information to raise issues in your department's, and even your school district's, planning for the future.

    PROJECT FUNDER:
The National Center for Research on Cultural Diversity and Second Language Learning . (This Center was one of 21 research centers funded by the Office of Educational Research and Improvement of the U.S. Department of Education.)
This five-year research project investigated ways in which classroom teachers could promote students' academic language competence and social studies knowledge in their second language, develop and implement social studies lessons that are sensitive to the cultural and educational backgrounds of language minority students, and help these students adapt to the school-based culture. From 1991-1995, we had examined American history and world studies in middle school classrooms in multiple sites across the nation to identify which academic language and culture demands of this content area pose difficulties for these students and which strategies lead to student success. The classroom-based research was accomplished through observations, interviews, and the development of exemplary lesson plans and curricula that integrate language learning with content objectives. One component of this project, focused on the academic discourse in social studies classes, by analyzing samples of the language competence students need to succeed in the classes from textbooks, assignments, classroom interaction, and teacher talk. Another part of the research investigated ways to make language minority students familiar with common activities that occur in social studies classes, such as role playing, research reporting, and cooperative learning. Overall, the project identified promising practices that effective teachers use to help language minority students participate actively in class, develop English proficiency, and learn about American and world cultures while sharing information about their own.

    Better Than Ever
As these titles show, instructional software is improving
By Russell Smith Here's good news: Instructional software is getting better. Today's top-selling CD-ROMs have a nice combination of advanced software techniques and comprehensive instructional content. It looks as though the producers have finally stopped simply converting programs from floppies to CD-ROMs without really taking advantage of larger storage capabilities. What's more, the new software is less expensive than the titles of five years ago and has been carefully designed for specific segments of the education market. Here are some of my top picks for early 1999, along with phone numbers and web addresses so you can get more information and prices for volume purchases.
    Elementary titles

. (800) 213-5054. Ages 9 and up. This social studies CD-ROM uses the same concept of interactive narrated modules that is so effective in Pierian's Geography of Earth and Mapping Concepts CD-ROMs. Overviews of key science concepts are followed by instruction and problem-solving activities. Students learn important details about the biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, climate, and atmosphere, people and their environment, and natural resources. Teachers will be pleased with the essential elements covered in this program.

Great Products for Your Social Studies Curriculum
    By PCI Staff Writer
    February 1, 2002
In an attempt to understand and deal with the tragedies of 9/11 and events since, many classrooms are focusing on social studies education. This is, of course, a natural response, as the National Council on the Social Studies states: "Social studies educators help students define their place in an interconnected world and an interconnected country." There is no time like the present to introduce, reinforce, and affirm the civic ideals and practices that create good citizens. PCI presents a collection of products and materials that will help you teach your students the knowledge, intellectual skills, and civic values required for meeting their responsibilities as citizens of a democratic nation.

American Studies at Sussex offers two MA programmes, one in literature and one in history, and a wide range of expertise for the supervision of MPhil and DPhil research. There are possibilities for part-time study at both MA and MPhil/DPhil levels, and teaching faculty are committed to small-group teaching as well as a high standard of research supervision. The School of Humanities , in which all American Studies postgraduate students are based, provides an academic community where intellectual (and social) links with students and faculty in other disciplines can be easily made. The faculty represent a wide range of research specialisms in American and also Canadian Studies, with a concentration in history and social science on American foreign relations, labour history, African American history, and gender and public policy. In literature there is a concentration of expertise in contemporary fiction and poetry, modernism, popular culture, race, gender and ethnicity in 20th-century writing, American theatre and the literature and discourse of migration. Faculty are known particularly for their interest in comparative studies - of colonial history, constitutions and constitutionalism, workers' rights on both sides of the Atlantic, international, especially inter-American history, European and American romanticism, and modernism and post-modernism. But the study of American history, political and social institutions, literature and culture does not stop at the American Studies Department. Sussex's interdisciplinary approach ensures that faculty in other disciplines also include American subjects in their research interests.
