(Reporting of additional detail on this study is embargoed for July 14, 2002, 4 p.m. ET.) Both studies were supported by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of Health. The June 26 issue of JAMA The 815 people participating in the Morris study were part of the Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP), a study of a large, diverse community of people age 65 and older. Participants were free of dementia at the start of the study and followed for an average of 3.9 years. At an average of 1.7 years from their baseline assessment, participants completed a questionnaire, asking them in detail about the kinds and quantities of foods consumed in the previous year.

That aluminum supposedly causes Alzheimer's disease has been well publicized, but no solid link has been proven. Postmortem examinations of Alzheimer's patients brains found traces of aluminum, but subsequent studies are contradictory. Some studies have found higher than normal amounts of aluminum while others haven't. A number of studies have even found that groups of people exposed to high levels of aluminum do not have an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. Order Barefoots Coral Calcium. Alzheimer’s Disease
Question: What is Alzheimer’s Disease? Answer: Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative disease of the brain from which there is no recovery. Slowly and inexorably, the disease attacks nerve cells in all parts of the cortex of the brain, as well as some surrounding structures, thereby impairing a person's abilities to govern emotions, recognize errors and patterns, coordinate movement, and remember. At the last, an afflicted person loses all memory and mental functioning. Question: How can Alzheimer’s Disease be prevented? Answer: There have been no proven methods for preventing Alzheimer's disease since the cause of it is still unknown. Question: Can a person who has Alzheimer’s disease get well? Answer: Unfortunately for the more than 15 million people worldwide who have Alzheimer's disease, the answer at the moment is, No. There currently is no treatment that can substantially reverse the progressive loss of memory and cognitive function that come with this disease. But there are therapies that may temporarily slow or halt the progress of Alzheimer's disease and minimize some of the more disturbing psychological and/or behavioral problems it can bring. And ongoing research holds out the possibility of new therapies that may prevent, better treat, and ultimately reverse the damage caused by Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common causes of the loss of mental function known broadly as dementia . This type of dementia proceeds in stages, gradually destroying memory, reason, judgment, language, and eventually the ability to carry out even the simplest of tasks. These characteristic symptoms acquired a name in the early part of the 20th century when Alois Alzheimer, a German physician, described the signs of the disease in the brain. Alzheimer had a patient in her fifties who suffered from what seemed to be a mental illness. But when she died in 1906, an autopsy revealed dense deposits, now called neuritic plaques , outside and around the nerve cells in her brain. Inside the cells were twisted strands of fiber, or

With Diet The following are summaries of key findings from books by Rosemary C. Fisher. Included are recommendations to combat Alzheimer's Disease with diet. Her recommendations are the result of reviewing over 200 medical studies from the New England Journal of Medicine The Lancet Journal of Nutrition and other medical journals on how diet can affect a person's health and well-being as one ages. Magnesium and Brain Functioning
Magnesium is also necessary for brain function. According to the publication (October, 1995) Food and Nutrition Research, a publication of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Greenbelt, Md., it was reported that magnesium is the fourth most abundant element in the brain. A low level of magnesium overexcites the brain's neurons and results in less coherence. Good sources of magnesium are the following: defatted soy flour, whole grains, wheat bran, and nuts. As I stated before, I make sure I get at least 1/3 cup of defatted soy flour each day in my diet. It not only may help with mental functioning, but as my other articles and books indicate, it may help with preventing cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis

Vitamin K never gets any press. It's just not very exciting. Other vitamins do daring things like throw themselves in front of free radicals to keep you from aging. Vitamin K's only claim to fame is that it helps blood coagulate. Big deal. It comes from green vegetables. Ho-hum. Well, that was then, and this is now. Put on your party hat because vitamin K is about to throw the bash of the century. Vitamin K is a lot more exciting than anybody ever dreamed. It may be a key anti-aging vitamin. It may prevent both heart disease and osteoporosis. And it's a stronger antioxidant than vitamin E or coenzyme Q10 Vitamin K may be the future of treating certain kinds of cancer. And, it may have something to do with Alzheimer's disease . Stand back: this neglected vitamin is stepping into the limelight. Arteries, aging, and vitamin K

The Kearneys (Kevin, Cassidy, Michael, and Maeghan) have sent a most excellent article that resolves an earlier paradox in the Alzheimer's disease Science News. There was a British report last July, Alzheimer's vaccine 'safe to use' , about several patients who had been recruited for early Phase I trials of a promising new Alzheimer's vaccine. Such vaccines have prevented Alzheimer's plaques from developing in the brains of mice. Then in December, there was an announcement, Researchers develop vaccine for Alzheimer's , about the revolutionary discovery of an Alzheimer's vaccine in Toronto. But the Toronto vaccine was in an earlier stage of development than the British vaccine, having only been tried with mice. It would be a year before human trials could begin. But what had happened to the British Phase I trials? How did the efforts relate? The above article seems to tell the tale. The British have been inundated with requests to admit Grandma and Uncle Bartholemew to their experimental program. Consequently, they're keeping a low profile. Let the Toronto researchers enjoy the limelight, and fend off Granny and Uncle Bart. Pretty shrewd! Now the Brits are in Phase II trials with 80 patients at 4 secret British hospitals. Sh-h-h! If you find out which hospitals they are, don't tell anybody. It's a secret.
