Healthful Diet Aids Memory-Impaired Seniors
ANOREXIA Healthful Diet Aids Memory-Impaired Seniors Source: Tufts University
September 7, 2000 (Reviewed: January 2, 2003) A study in the Canadian Journal of Public Health reports that an inadequate diet can compound the health problems of seniors with age-related memory loss and even hasten death. Nutritionists consider the factors assessed in this studylow albumin, declining weight, poor appetiteas "red flags" that signal an underlying issue, such as chronic illness or poorly fitting dentures, that can interfere with a person's ability to eat well. While it is not always possible to fix everything that's wrong with a person's diet, this study shows that nutrition status can affect the overall health of memory-impaired seniors. In the abstract, the solution seems simple, but anyone who cares for persons debilitated by an illness such as Alzheimer's disease knows that getting them to eat an adequate amount of food can be an ongoing struggle. They're often less able to chew and swallow without choking, and may experience dulled senses of taste and smell that can make once familiar foods unappealing. To add to the problem, people absorb and utilize certain nutrients less efficiently as they get older, so they don't necessarily get the full nutritional benefits of all the foods they eat.

Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative disorder of the brain which causes progressive decline in memory and general cognitive abilities. Slowly and inexorably, the disease attacks nerve cells in all parts of the cortex of the brain, as well as some surrounding structures, thereby impairing a person's abilities to govern emotions, recognize errors and patterns, coordinate movement, and remember. At the last, an afflicted person loses all memory and mental functioning. There is no recovery. Apart from the progressive destruction of nerve cells, a wide range of abnormalities can be seen in the brains of patients who have died from Alzheimer's, including extracellular deposits of amyloid protein and microscopic tangles of fibrils inside nerve cells. Currently, there is no known cure for Alzheimer's Disease.

Homocysteine promotes Alzheimer's disease
Folic acid, vitamins B6 and B12 may lower the risk
It has been known for a long time that an elevated level of homocysteine (a toxic amino acid) in blood is a risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases such as Age-Associated -Memory Impairment, Alzheimers disease and other types of dementia. Folic acid (folate), and vitamins B6 and B12 antagonise homocysteine in the metabolism, and their role is being investigated as these vitamins may open up new safe and inexpensive preventive strategies. In a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease, researchers led by Dr. Mark P. Mattson, from the National Institute on Ageing Gerontology Research Center in Baltimore, have now demonstrated that decreased intake of folic acid causes an increase in levels of homocysteine, which is associated with increased hippocampal neurodegeneration. Their report appeared in The Journal of Neuroscience, March 2002.

ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE Five to ten percent of people over the age of 85 have Alzheimer's disease. A smaller percentage of those under 65 are affected with it. Strongly implicated in this dreaded disease is aluminum. Aluminum is the commonest metal on the earth's crust and, after oxygen and selenium, the most abundant element on earth. It comes in bauxite ore. Fifty years ago the widespread use of this metal became common. And for many more years, aluminum salts have been used for pickling vegetables. We now find it in tap water, antacids, antiperspirants, and many other places. Dialysis patients go mad, have trouble talking, confusion, muscle spasms, become helpless, demented, bedridden, and die. The large amounts of tap water from cities using aluminum for flocculation procedures apparently caused these patients to have their difficulty. These patients routinely swallow large amounts of aluminum in antacids to prevent the build-up of phosphorus in their blood. Dialysis dementia is a common complication of dialysis. Aluminum attaches itself to blood protein and gains easy entry to the brain.
In Guam, soil and water is low in calcium and magnesium, and especially high in aluminum. There is much Lou Gehrig's and Parkinson's disease in Guam. Aluminum is high in the neurofibrillary tangles.

A Guide to Better Health Brought to You by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System Common Amino Acid Linked With Alzheimer’s Disease Auburn, March 8, 2002- Researchers believe an amino acid already linked to heart disease and stroke may also contribute to a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Individuals with high blood levels of this amino acid, known as homocysteine, face twice the average risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, one of several forms of dementia that typically strike in old age. Researchers have not yet established a direct causal link between high blood levels of homocysteine and Alzheimer’s disease. "It could be that homocysteine is merely an effect of Alzheimers disease rather than a cause," says Dr. Robert Keith, an Alabama Cooperative Extension System nutritionist. Since people suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia typically do not eat as well as other people, it could be that the high blood levels of homocysteine are merely a reflection of their poor eating habits, he says.
