Doctors in Tasmania are looking into a link between Alzheimers disease and diet.
They have found patients with Alzheimers are more at risk of developing heart disease and stroke and think following a healthy diet may be the key.
Dr George Razay from Launceston General Hospital has found the same abnormalities in the blood of Alzheimers patients as those with heart disease.
Both groups had lower levels of good cholesterol and fatty acids and high levels of insulin.
He says one way of warding off Alzheimers is to reduce the risk of heart disease.
"Basically healthy diet which is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acid and regular exercise can improve these vascular risk factors and might help to reduce the risk of Alzheimers," Dr Razay said.

MARK COLVIN: Finally tonight, there's new hope in the treatment of Alzheimers Disease. Researchers have discovered a link between the illness and diet. Up until now Alzheimers was considered simply to be part of the aging process. But researchers at Oxford University have found that food rich in folic acid and vitamin B12 could significantly reduce the prevalence of the disease.
Professor David Smith, who was in charge of the latest study, will unveil his findings at the Alzheimers Association's national conference in Perth this week. Adrienne Lowth reports.
ADRIENNE LOWTH: One in 10 people over the age of 70 develop some form of dementia, and Alzheimers Disease accounts for up to 70 per cent of cases. That number is expected to double in the next 25 years.
Alzheimers is a degenerative disorder which effects the brain. The most common symptom is forgetfulness.
For years Alzheimers has been considered simply one of those illnesses associated with growing old, but now researchers at Oxford University have discovered a link between the disease and diet.
Professor David Smith, who heads the Oxford project, says in particular the level of vitamins such as B12 and folate, appear to be significant.

Vegetarian Diet Increases Alzheimers Risk
Elderly people with low blood levels of vitamin B-12 and folate may face an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
Vitamin B-12 plays an important role in maintaining nerve cells, and some research has linked low blood levels of the vitamin to Alzheimer's and mental decline. Few studies have looked at whether there is such a connection between Alzheimer's and folate, a B vitamin key to the production and maintenance of body cells.
In a study of 370 men and women aged 75 and older, investigators found that those with low levels of either vitamin were twice as likely as those with normal levels to develop Alzheimer's over a 3-year period. Surprisingly, the link was even stronger among study participants who performed well on mental tests at the start of the study.

Alzheimer's disease is an illness which is characterised by dementia. It was named after Alois Alzheimer, a German doctor who first described it in 1907. Dementia is the term given to a group of symptoms, which includes confusion, memory loss, poor problem-solving and poor concentration. There are many diseases which lead to dementia, the most common being Alzheimer's disease, which accounts for about 60 per cent of all cases. People with dementia differ in terms of which signs and symptoms they have and the speed and extent to which their dementia progresses - problems vary, even day to day. Dementia usually occurs in older people. About 3 in 100 people over the age of 65 are affected and 10-15 in 100 people over the age of 80. Dementia in people under 65 is known as early onset dementia (previously known as pre-senile dementia) and is rare, affecting only 1 in 1000 people. Symptoms
The symptoms of Alzheimer's disease vary from one person to another, depending on how far it has progressed. People with the disease usually experience:
  • Confusion. This may include misunderstanding who or where they are.

(Frequently Asked Questions) What are the Myths about Alzheimer's Disease "Does Aluminum Cause Alzheimer's disease?
There have been so many stories and myths about Alzheimer's disease that it boggles the mind. If one were to believe all of them, you wouldn't cook in aluminum pots nor drink sodas from aluminum cans. I was at an Alzheimer's conference years ago when a man burst through the door waving a sign that said "Aluminum causes Alzheimer's. They kicked him out, but that is not to say that aluminum could not be the cause. Most experts will tell you, however, that aluminum is not a cause of Alzheimer's disease. You can safely continue using your antiperspirants, drink the city water (aluminum is used in some water systems to remove silt), wrap left-overs in aluminum foil, take antacids, and cook with your aluminum pots and pans.¾ In my opinion, it truly depends on who you speak to. Personally, I really do not know the cause of Alzheimer's and I really don't know anyone who does.

Homocysteine General

Homocysteine (pronounced homo-SIS-teen) is an amino acid and is found normally in the body. Homocysteine’s metabolism is linked to that of several vitamins, especially folic acid, B6, and B12. Deficiencies of those vitamins may cause elevated levels of homocysteine. In recent years, studies have accumulated suggesting that a high level of homocysteine increases a person's chance of developing heart disease, stroke, alzheimer’s disease and peripheral vascular disease (a reduced blood flow to the hands and feet). In September 1995, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) convened a special panel to review the scientific evidence about homocysteine's possible link to heart disease. The homocysteine information that follows is based on the panel's conclusions. Briefly, the panel said that an elevated homocysteine level appears to increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. However, no studies have been done to show that lowering the homocysteine level reduces the risk of heart disease.

These are only a few of the many Diseases that Affect Millions of Men,and Women, of all ages, All over the World. Alzhiemers/Dementia disease is an illness of the brain. It causes the brain to lose nerve cells, leading to problems with memory, thinking, feeling, and everyday living.
As many as 4 million people in this country may have Alzheimers disease. It sometimes affects people between the ages of 65 and 69 or even younger, but it is more likely to affect people over the age of 80. because people are living longer than in the past, more and more American's are becoming affected by Alzheimers disease.
The exact cause of Alzheimers disease is not yet known. No one is sure why some people get it and others do not. The medical community believes that people whose family members have had Alzheimers disease may be more likely to develope it too.
Scientists believe that the brain chemical called acetycholine (ah-see-ti-ko-leen) helps memory work. They also suspect that not having enough of this chemical plays a role in Alzheimers disease.

What Can You Do to Reduce Your Risk of Dementia?
Our current knowledge about risk factors for Alzheimer's disease does not illuminate any actions people can take to reduce their risk. Although Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in elderly people, many different conditions can cause dementia themselves or can occur along with Alzheimer's disease to worsen dementia. Some of these conditions may be avoidable if a person is able to maintain good physical and psychological health. The vascular dementias (e.g., multi-infarct dementia or MID) are believed to account for the largest portion of cases of dementia next to Alzheimer's disease. Since strokes play a role in MID, at least some of the risk factors for this form of dementia are probably the same as those for stroke. It is possible to control some risk factors for stroke (such as hypertension, smoking, diet, etc.). Two of the most common causes of potentially reversible dementia are drug toxicity and depression. With age, the body's responses to drugs change. Therefore, it is important for older people to work with their physicians to regularly re-evaluate the goals and dosages of drug treatments. Researchers are recognizing that clinical depression is relatively common in older adults, and that, if not treated appropriately, it may lead to other health problemspossibly including dementia.
