Tragic Event in Albanian History Commemorated in Music ! Available for the first time in America on audiocassette, and only from Frosina, are classical music compositions by two of Albania's leading composers Thoma Gaqi and Tonin Harapi. Poem Simfonik Borova by Thoma Gaqi (Side 1) Before WWII, The Albanian town of Borova had about 450 inhabitants and 100 houses, stores, and churches.. However, on July 6, 1943, all of the buildings were destroyed by Nazi German occupiers of Albania, and 107 inhabitants were massacred including 5 entire families. The youngest victim was an infant of only 4 months, the oldest - a woman of 73. The tragic events are commemorated in the symphony titled "Poem Simfonik Borova" by Albanian composer, Thoma Gaqi, who was born in Korça in southern Albania on August 21, 1948. He graduated in composition from the "Academy of Fine Arts" in Tirana where he studied under the direction of Albania's foremost composer, Çesk Zadeja. Gaqi's first composition was a concert for violin and orchestra. Along with the symphonic poen "Borova", he composed the orchestral rhapsody "Albania Celebrating."

BOOK REVIEW
THE ALBANIANS: a modern history
by Miranda Vickers
Reviewed by Antonia Young A particular merit of Vickers' new book is its concise clarity; it should bring Albanian history to a wide readership. It is ideally suited to be a paperback (at present only available in hardback, though still half the price of the other two books). Vickers' sympathetic yet balanced treatment is admirable. An im dportant aspect of her book is its attention to Kosovo (Vickers is currently working on a book of its history) as a center for intellectuals in the last century at a time when Albania itself was suffering serious prohibitions on education, writing and publishing in the Albanian language. Vickers explains the crucial role of Kosovo in the Albanian national awakening and the peoples' revolt against Ottoman oppression as well as its permanent effects on developments within Albania, especially since the nineteenth century. The rise in national consciousness she relates to the handling by present day Kosovars in their situation of gross human rights abuses at the hands of the Serbs (observing that they have also suffered here in earlier times; she mentions elsewhere that Serbs and Montenegrins were "mercilessly killed" by Albanians in Montenegro. Twice during this century plans to re-unite Kosovo with Albania fell through (in 1928 and again under Tito in 1940. By the end of World War II Tito changed his mind, expecting to annex Albania as a seventh republic of Yugoslavia. It was in 1944 that the Kosovo Rising brought particularly harsh reprisals from the Yugoslav army commanders.

The Serbian Invasion of Kosova
"I have no time to write at length. I can say that terrible things are happening here. All this makes my blood curdle and I wonder over and over again how it is possible that a man can be such a barbarian and do such things. This is terrible, horrendous I do not
dare and have no time to write extensively. I can say that Luma no longer exists. Everything has been turned into corpses, ashes and dust. There were villages with 100, 150 or 200 households in which absolutely no one was left alive. No one, I tell you ! They rounded up 40 to 50 people and slaughtered them all with knives. Ordinary looting is carried out everywhere. The officers seized hold of whole flocks of livestock and put their soldiers to sell them in Prizren..."

HISTORY OF ALBANIAN LITERATURE
Un'te paghesont' pr'emenit t'Atit e t'Birit e t'Spirit Senit.
(I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost)
Pal Engjelli, Baptismal Formula, 1462

Father Brocardus , a fourteenth century Dominican friar, circulated a pamphlet in the year 1332 to win support for the Crusades. In it he said that "although the Albanians have a language quite other that the Latins, they use Latin letters in all their books". Such is the earliest known reference to the existence of an Albanian literature. A fragmentary translation of St. Mathew's Gospel, chapter 28, verses 62-66, followed by an Easter chant is the earliest known scrap of Albanian, and was discovered by Sofronio Grassisi in 1912. It is now housed in the Ambrosian Library at Milan. It is written in Tosk dialect, an interesting point since this suggest that a Christian tradition once existed in Southern as well as in Northern Albania, and further, that the New Testament, or at least parts of it, were once translated into Albanian. The manuscript antedates the art of printing and thus belongs to the fifteenth century. The chant reads as follow: "Christ is risen from dead; with death he has overcome death, and to those who are in the grave has been given life." Another fragment is a baptismal formula by Pal Engjelli , Archbishop of Durres, and Cardinal of Albania, who is said to have been a personal friend of the Albanian hero-king Scanderbeg (1414-1468). This formula is part of a pastoral letter dated 1462, written after the Archbishop had paid a visit to the Church of the Holy Trinity at Mati. Its object was to enable Albanian priests to perform the baptismal rite on behalf of participants who knew no Latin. It reads: "I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost." It is preserved in the Laurentian Library of Florence.
