Alabama State Parks Alabama State Parks Recreation Guide Alabama is world renowned for natural beauty and outdoor recreation. Visiting a state park is an excellent way to gain access to the natural environment and the recreation opportunities created by it. Description - Alabama Parks are located in all areas of the state. They support a vast array of attractions that include reservoirs, mountains, rock formations, rivers, beaches, campgrounds, picnic grounds, etc. The 40 parks provide access to the plains, mountains, canyons and valleys. Most of the state parks are fee areas, where a day or annual pass is necessary to use the facilities. Recreation - Recreation opportunities range the spectrum from backpacking to rock climbing. There are excellent opportunities for fishing hiking , photography, camping and picnicking in many of the parks. Climate - Much of Alabama receives nearly 60 inches of rain each year. The highest amount of rain reaches the region as afternoon thunderstorms in July, August and September. Summers are extremely hot and humid with temperatures frequently reaching above 100 degrees F. Summer nights cool slightly and provide a good time to travel through the region. Winter temperatures are mild, rarely dipping below 40 degrees with the humidity level at its lowest in November and December. Spring and fall are very pleasant times to visit the region. Spring brings mild temperatures and blooming trees and flowers. During the fall temperatures range from 65 to 85 degrees F with low humidity levels. Northern Alabama is generally cooler than the south due to its higher elevations.

Briarfield Ironworks Park

Civil War history combines with outdoor recreation. Beginning as a Confederate ironworks, then destroyed by the Union soldiers, this Bibb County furnace was rebuilt after the war and operated until 1894. A component of the Tannehill Historical State Park, Brierfield Park showcases the remains of the furnace, but also offers hiking and nature trails, campsites, and a swimming pool. A museum houses artifacts and details the history of the area. Several Civil War Re-enactments take place in the Park, as well as an annual Music Festival in May. Chewacla State Park
Chickasaw State Park

A rustic day retreat for family and friends. In rural Marengo County, south of Demopolis, is the 520 acres of Chickasaw State Park. A great site for a day's picnic, the park offers a barbecue grilling pavilion, covered tables, and picnic areas perfect for large cookouts and gatherings. A playground and wading pool provide entertainment for children, while a short hiking trail is wonderful for after picnic perambulations. A small ten-site campground with full hookups and other primitive campsites allow for overnight stays.

Bankhead Lake

A picnic spot with a view of the Bankhead Lock and Dam. The northernmost Corps of Engineers project on the Black Warrior-Tombigbee river system, Bankhead Lake stretches for 65 miles over 9,100 surface acres. The only public recreation site on the lake is a picnic facility on the east side of the river. This area overlooks the John Hollis Bankhead Lock and Dam, 34 miles from Tuscaloosa. All other facilities on the lake, including marinas and fish camps, are privately owned. Bass fishing, hunting and boating are all popular on the lake. Blowing Wind Cave Wildlife Refuge
Commune with the bats at this northern refuge. Seven miles west of Scottsboro is a site you will find listed in that popular travel tome "A Vacationer's Guide to Bats." Sitting just above the Sauty Creek of Guntersville Reservoir, Blowing Wind Cave National Wildlife Refuge consists of 264 acres of hardwoods and a cave which houses the endangered gray and Indiana bats. This important habitat is home to numerous other bat species as well. Due to the delicate nature of the habitat, visitors may not enter the cave, however, they can enjoy hiking, picnicking, and wildlife photography on the Refuge grounds. The must-see event of the year at the Refuge is the bat exodus. One summer evening at dusk, over 500,000 gray bats fly from the cave in the largest annual emergence in the eastern United States.

Perry Lakes Ecology History of Perry Lakes Park The Perry Lakes Park and Wildlife Sanctuary contains about 600 acres available to the public for outdoor recreation, education, scientific research, and other activities. Nature trails (fire lanes) make walking through the woods fairly easy and safe. There are three oxbow lakes making up a wild hardwood bottomland flood plane swamp environment. The lakes are surrounded by an old growth mixed hardwood forest that provides some of the best birding in the State. Fishing in the three oxbow lakes is best done from small aluminum boats or canoes. A concrete boat ramp has been build by the Department of Conservation to facilitate launching small boats on trailers. A picnic area with a pavilion is located beside the oxbow named Perry Lake. The Perry Lakes Park incorporates three oxbow lakes which were formed when the Cahaba River changed its channel almost 150 years ago. The original concrete picnic tables and benches along with cooking pits made from river rock still exist in the old park area. Numerous water tupelo
