How should airport executives initiate and finance essential capital improvement projects amid declining airport revenue and diminished travel demand? The conference aims to present the characteristics of modern airport architecture and its suitability as applied to Nordic airports early in the 21st century. Does a separate style of Nordic airport architecture exist? The conference deals mainly with airport architecture in the ten-year period 1995-2005. In conjunction with the conference, an exhibition of modern Nordic airport architecture will be arranged at the Museum of Sketches for Public Art in Lund.
BACKGROUND
Air travel grew strongly in the late 1990s. Becoming inadequate, old airports and their buildings became bottlenecks in the air-traffic flow. A comprehensive extension of airports is going on. New runways, terminal buildings are coming into existence. The centres of architectural and investment gravity have hitherto lain in extending the main national airports. Many of the smaller airports have also required extension, partly because air-traffic patterns have changed. In parallel to these Nordic developments, the capacities of airports in all parts of Europe have become correspondingly larger.
Airports comprise the intersections of a global communications network and are the framework for one of the most dynamic activities in modern society. At the end of the 1990s, optimism about air travel was remarkable. The large and growing numbers of people that this transportation apparatus deals with require that airports must be extended and are today often the largest construction projects in their countries. The complexity of their activities, new requirements for security and frontier controls, a strong technical development within this industry, demands on the physical structures of buildings for adaptability and flexibility, and altered conditions for operating economics; together put great demands on the work of forming airport terminals. An important architectural basis for the conference is the renewal of the five Nordic capital airports.

Art: 'I will not insist on what appears to me today to be absolutely inadmissible, not just the poem, but any sort of literary production which does not comply with the anti-artistic, faithful and objective annotation of the world of facts, the revelation of whose occult meaning we still demand and await.' (S. Dali, Oui, Boston 1998) How does an artist organize her/himself with respect to the audience and to the artistic discipline? What does the artist work with?
Airports: 'Airplanes and airports have my favorite kind of food service, my favorite kind of bathrooms, my favorite peppermint Life Savers, my favorite kinds of entertainment, my favorite loudspeaker address systems, my favorite conveyor belts, my favorite graphics and colors, the best security checks, the best views, the best perfume shops, the best employees and the best optimism.' (A Warhol, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, 1977). The network of airports is a portal, a business, a science fiction fantasy, an escalation of short-lived consumption, a non-place, a unique system which has some of the characteristics of the city, a high-risk disaster site, a place where incredible densities of people collect ..

Long Beach Airport Tour Delights All Ages Long Beach Airport's (LGB) Tour Program, an informative and electric tour which covers such topics as aviation operations, aviation history, architecture and art, is available free to groups with advance reservations. A new feature of the tour program includes the facility's art and architecture. "Long Beach Airport possesses one of the few historic terminal buildings in the U.S. that remains a full-service hub updated for current purposes", notes Ruthann Lehrer, historic preservation officer for the City of Long Beach. LGB's efforts at maintaining the unique landmark and planning for future restoration were recently lauded with a 1999 Preservation Award by Long Beach Heritage. The airport terminal was constructed in 1940 - 41 and is considered a masterpiece of early Streamline Moderne architecture designed by two of the City's most eminent architects, W. Horace Austin and Kenneth Wing. LGB is the oldest municipal airport in Southern California preceding Los Angeles International Airport by three years. The facility also houses several important artworks from the period. The terminal's extensive ceramic tile artworks by Grace Clements, a product of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) program in the 1940s, is also unusual, says Lehrer. More recently, a mosaic mural by local artist Patrick Mohr was added to the terminal. The artwork is a reflection of the historical, cultural, and physical qualities of Long Beach.

Helsinki-Malmi Airport: a pearl of 1930's functionalism under threat
History
Regular air traffic from Helsinki began in 1924 to Tallinn and Stockholm using floatplanes operating from Katajanokka seaplane airport in the heart of the capital. In Scandinavian countries with their long stretches of seashore and countless lakes, floatplanes could be commercially operated longer than in central Europe, where they were being replaced by land-based aircraft. In the beginning of the 1930's, land-based commercial air traffic with regular schedules had established itself in central Europe to such a degree that building airports on land became a prerequisite for joining the European air traffic route network both in Sweden and in Finland. This was considered necessary for both international cooperation and trade.
Helsinki Airport with its shining white, perfectly round main building became operational in December 1936. The huge hangar could accommodate six Junkers 52 aircraft, and was at the time the second largest in Europe. The modern instrument landing equipment was also worth mention in the book "Helsinki Airport" (1938): "The blind landing apparatus at Helsinki land airport is of Telefunken construction and is uniquely built in such a manner that the homing beams cross each other, one being directed north, the other one west."
