Agronomy professors elected fellows, receive awards
Agronomy professors swept several honors at the 2002 annual meeting of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America, Monday, Nov. 11, through Friday, Nov. 15, in Indianapolis. Dale Fjell, Gerard J. Kluitenberg and Michel D. Ransom were elected Fellows of the American Society of Agronomy. Fjell (left), a professor and extension crop production specialist, received a bachelor's degree from Wayne State College and a master's degree and doctorate from K-State. He has been a faculty member since 1982. Fjell was formerly the South Central Area Extension crops and soils specialist, based in Hutchinson. His research focuses on optimizing production practices for corn, grain sorghum and soybeans. Kluitenberg (right), professor of soil and environmental physics, received bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of California, Davis, and a doctorate from Iowa State University. He has been a faculty member since 1989. Kluitenberg's research focuses on soil water and chemical movement and variable-rate nutrient applications. He is pioneering a heat-pulse technique for measuring soil physical properties.

KENT A. McVAY
Assistant professor of agronomy, extension specialist - soil and water conservation

Utilizing a no-tillage cropping system, extension specialist Kent A. McVay, a Kansas State University assistant professor of agronomy, developed a soil and water conservation program for dry-land agriculture. Using the success of this system, McVay has begun an effort to bring no-tillage production methods to irrigated agriculture in central and western Kansas. McVay has also established a long-term, no-till demonstration field at the agronomy farm north of K-State. This field is currently being used to train agronomists and showcase many best-management practices. McVay also analyzes water runoff from the field for sediments, nutrients and pesticide losses. The field is the focus of a master's research project attempting to model these losses. McVay has co-authored eight publications since 1993. In addition to seeding and no-tillage cropping systems, McVay's research interests include crop water use efficiency, water movement in soils and the impact of cropping systems on water quality.

Plant Tissue Culture for Home Gardeners
Micropropagtion is an important alternative to more conventional methods of plant propagation. It involves production of plants from very small plant parts (e.g. buds, nodes, leaf segments, root segments etc.), grown aseptically (free from any microorganism) in a container where the environment and nutrition can be controlled. The resultant plants are genetically identical to parent plants. Whilst in a research laboratory such as that in the Department of Agronomy and Soil Science at UNE we use many high tech equipment to achieve plant production through tissue culture, it is important to note that many home gardeners and hobbyists could substitute the high tech equipment and instruments with ordinary house hold items.
Items Needed for Home Tissue Culture:
1 - A sterile still air cabinet used to transfer plants. A fish tank on its side makes an ideal transfer cabinet. Any perspex or glass chamber with dimensions of 50 cm (length), 40 cm (height) and 40 cm (depth) could easily be made into a transfer cabinet.
2 - A pressure cooker for sterilisation of media, instruments, water, paper towelling etc.
