    Dyslexia and ADD
1997 Penrice Publishing Of all the conditions that can mimic, mask or co-exist with ADD, dyslexia is probably the most well known. It is also one on the most misunderstood. Dyslexia is a learning disability that affects 17-20% of school age children according to the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Like ADD, the dyslexic mind functions differently than others. Dyslexic children, like ADD children, tend to be above average intelligence, if not gifted. But they have specific difficulties with words. They have difficulty recalling words, even words they are familiar with. They also have difficulty with sequencing. Letters and syllables can become inverted (like "aminal") as can entire words. ("Come here over.") The child may have trouble distinguishing between the letters "b," "d" and "p." Because dyslexia makes reading very difficult, these children often experience significant frustration in school. But, like ADD, dyslexia seems to also come with some notable strengths. Many dyslexics have tremendous musical ability. They are able to design and build extremely complex Lego structures and vehicles without the benefit of a picture or directions. Many excel in sports due to an inherent ability to perceive all of the players and activities on the playing field simultaneously. Dyslexic adults often excel in the arts, architecture, engineering and invention. Some "red flags" that may mean a child is dyslexic include:
    • Avoiding difficult tasks, particularly those requiring reading or writing

    What Is Dyslexia?
    Historical Perspective
Before the National Institutes of Health began their research in the 1980's, the only definition of dyslexia was an exclusionary one. If a child's difficulty with reading could not be explained by low intelligence, poor eye sight, poor hearing, inadequate educational opportunities, or any other problem, then the child must be dyslexic. That definition was not satisfactory to parents, teachers, or researchers. So here are three different definitions in use today. Back to top
    Simple Definition

Revised definition from the International Dyslexia Association
Dyslexia is a neurologically-based, often familial, disorder which interferes with the acquisition and processing of language. Varying in degrees of severity, it is manifested by difficulties in receptive and expressive language, including phonological processing, in reading, writing, spelling, handwriting, and sometimes in arithmetic.

How elephants could help children with dyslexia
The Daily Express March 22, 2001 Neurologist Harold Levinson claims he can diagnose dyslexia by showing elephants moving across a computer screen. If he is right, he could help 375,000 dyslexic children. JOHN TRIGGS investigates David Gooden is one of the brightest 11-year-olds you could hope to meet. He is lively, articulate and intelligent. In fact, he's recently been given a special academic distinction by his school. But last year David's life was very different. He was behind with his work and often in trouble. He also felt clumsy and suffered from headaches. His parents took him to see Dr Harold Levinson, a psychiatrist and neurologist from New York. He has recently invented a machine which he claims can diagnose dyslexia. At first glance, it seems simple enough. It is essentially a computer, with a monitor on which a line of black elephants is displayed. When the programme is started, the elephants move slowly across the white background. Gradually their speed increases until eventually they can only be seen as a blur. Dr Levinson believes those with dyslexia will see the elephants turn into a blur far earlier than a person without the condition.

    Our Child Wasn't Learning...
    “…they said it was A.D.D.”
The fifth grade boy stepped off the school bus and began his walk home. His head and stomach ached. Today was like most, except he felt even more frustrated. He kicked the front door open, slammed it shut, threw his books and stomped up the stairs, dejected. His mother found him sitting in a corner, hugging his knees. “What's the matter, guy?” “Nothing”, he mumbled. “How was school?” she persisted. The boy just buried his face deeper into his knees. “Did someone give you a hard time?”
