Austin Tappan Wright
Buccaneer Books 1942 A book review by Danny Yee Studying at Harvard, John Lang meets and befriends Dorn, a student from the far-off country of Islandia, where he is later appointed United States consul. Islandia is struggling to decide on a political response to the imperialist powers, and Lang becomes involved in the conflict. He also becomes involved at a more personal level, and must struggle to come to terms with Islandia's differences. Wright started creating Islandia - an imaginatively envisaged and richly detailed nation - in his childhood, but his writings were only discovered, edited, and (partly) published after his death. Islandia is a rural, low technology society, governed by a small-scale aristocracy, where families and ties to the land are of central importance. It is a utopia in that it describes an alternative way of life, to be compared and favourably contrasted with reality (the United States in the early decades of this century), but it is not what one might expect from a "utopian novel". Politics and economics are largely peripheral to Islandia , and it is as an adventure and above all as a romance that it shines. Islandia's most intriguing differences are in the workings of personal relationships, of friendship and love, and it is Lang's relationships with women, Islandian and American, which provide the central threads of the novel. (There are three words for love in Islandian:

Biography
Austin Tappan Wright was born on 20 August, 1883 in Hanover, New Hampshire to John Henry Wright (Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University) and Mary Tappan Wright (a novelist). He was educated at Harvard College (1905), and Harvard Law School (1908), where he edited the Harvard Law Review and graduated cum laude . He married Margaret Garrad Stone and had four children, William Austin, Sylvia, Phyllis, Benjamin Tappan. After serving in the Boston law firm of Louis Brandeis, Wright took faculty positions at the University of California law school at Berkeley (1916-1924) and the University of Pennsylvania law school (1924-1931). He died on 18 September, 1931 in a car accident.
Islandia
Islandia in 1942, eleven years after Wright's death. The book sold approximately 30,000 copies. In the novel, a pre-industrial civilization confronts early twentieth century colonialism in a struggle to reconcile their happily unadorned culture with the excesses of modern technology. The protagonist, John Lang, attempts to mediate this culture clash as a United States consul - but gradually comes to appreciate Islandian life. Eventually, he brings his New England bride to the Island and rejects American culture altogether. Despite some elements of Islandia which contain a distressingly racist tinge, the novel's progressive attitude towards the state of women in Wright's time (and our own) made this novel a classic in utopian literature.

    ==a critical list with discussions==
    This is a brief discussion of Austin Tappan Wright and, of course, of some books by Austin Tappan Wright.
    This discussion and list does not necessarily include every book by Wright; it includes those books that I both know and like. Just as with the author list itself, omission of a particular item may mean I didn't think highly enough of the omitted item, or it may simply mean that I have not yet sufficient familiarity with it. (In a very few cases, I have listed some books merely on the strength of my opinion of the author: all such books are clearly marked below, as throughout these lists, with a hash mark ( ) before the title so you know what's what.)
    I don't pretend that this discussion is a deep analysis. My intent is no more than to give you a rough idea of what kinds of tales Wright tells, how those tales are usually told, and what makes them and Wright worthy; in sum, to help you rank Wright (and the works by Wright listed here) on your personal literary "to do" list.

    Islandia is unusual in being one of the great displays of the world-builder's art outside fantasy and science fiction. The hero of the story is John Lang, a young American who befriends an Islandian exchange student in his freshman year at Harvard and after graduation finds himself, one of the only Americans with a speaking knowledge of the Islandian language, appointed consul to Islandia. Though excellence of world-building is not the novel's only good quality, it's the main attraction, and unless you enjoy reading a story for the sake of its setting, you should spend your time elsewhere. A rule of thumb: if you skipped the appendices in The Lord of the Rings , you should probably skip Islandia. If you read them and still wanted to know more about the history and culture of Middle-Earth, you might well enjoy Islandia. Islandia is a country on the coast of the Karain semicontinent in the southern hemisphere. One could compare it to Japan in the age of its civilization, its level of technology when discovered by Europeans, and to some extent in its political relations with Europe and America. However, its culture and political organization don't resemble that of Japan particularly. It seems superficially like feudal Europe, but with a much less deep or steep hierarchy separating the 'peasants' from the 'nobility'. There is only one City and one University, which thus need no names to distinguish them from others. Most significantly, no Islandian considers either of them his permanent home; one may spend his working career in the City or University, but always can return to his family's farm.
