  • Biographical Sketch of Elizabeth Winthrop
WAS BORN in Washington, D.C. in a big rambling house where I grew up with my five brothers. My father was a political columnist. I used to come home every day from school and hear the typewriter clacking away in his office, and I would think, now that sure looks like an easy job. My father tried to convince me that I was wrong, but it wasn't until I grew up and tried writing for a living that I realized how hard it really is to face that blank page in the typewriter every day.

September 14, 1948- Author of: A Little Demonstration of Affection , etc. I WAS BORN in Washington, D.C. in a big rambling house where I grew up with my five brothers. I wrote my first story when I was twelve years old. Unfortunately, I left it on a bus, which upset me so much that I didn't write anything else for five years. My senior year in high school, I took a writing course and that started me off again. I basically believe that writing is ten percent talent and ninety percent practice and perseverence. I try to write something every day even if it's just an entry in a journal or a letter to a friend. I read constantly because I love it and also because books are a writer's road map. Sometimes I read a book twice, once for the sheer enjoyment of it and then again, to note how another writer might have handled a scene or a transition.

About Us Video Menu Scrapbook Contact Us ... quicktime video Running time: 28 minutes This program traces the lives of 17th Century women in America. Their significant - though often ignored contributions - to American History are portrayed through the life of one exceptional and courageous woman, Elizabeth Winthrop.
Elizabeth Winthrop arrived alone on American shores in 1631. She was a young widow with a small child. Over her lifetime, she established four homesteads and raised and educated a large family. She was one of the first women in the New World to hold property in her own name. Like many colonial women, Elizabeth Winthrop exhibited remarkable courage in the face of tremendous adversity.
Jackie Judd of ABC News narrates this women's history documentary with noted historians describing the role of women in building a nation. Joni Steele Kimberlin is co-producer. "Women like Elizabeth Winthrop . . . had a kind of courage we are only very rarely called upon to have in our society . . . getting in a rocket and going to the moon is going to a place about which we know far more than she knew about New England."
    Dr. Jane Kamensky

SOME PRACTICAL ADVICE ON WRITING AND PUBLISHING FOR YOUNG WRITERS Secondly, read as much as you can. Learn from the storytellers who have come before you. Notice how they have practiced their craft. A writer is like a carpenter. We have a toolbox which includes vocabulary, punctuation, sentence structure, tense, point of view, etc.. All of these are just tools in our toolbox. The more you read the more tools you will acquire to "build the building" of your story. So keep on reading. Do not expect to be published by a major publishing company or magazine right away. Again, if you are interested in playing baseball for the New York Mets, you will not expect to walk on the field as their first baseman while you are in the sixth grade or even in highschool. The same thing applies to writing. Concentrate on the writing first. Worry about the publishing later. If you want other people besides your friends and your family to read your work, you can try some of these ideas:
    • If your school has a newspaper or a literary journal, try sending them some of your work. If they don't have one, maybe you could talk to the school librarian or your teacher about starting one.

    THE CASTLE IN THE ATTIC

Winner of The Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award
and The California Young Readers Medal Ten year old William can't wait to play with the mysterious castle his housekeeper, Mrs. Phillips, has given him. For years she has been telling him about the old stone and wood model with its drawbridge, moat and the finger-high knight to guard the gates. And now it is his. But when William learns that Mrs. Phillips is going back to England to live with her brother, he vows to find a way to keep Mrs. Phillips with him forever. And when he breaks the spell cast on the tiny silver knight, he suddenly knows how to do it. But William's big idea turns out to be the worst mistake of his life! This is an enthralling story of magic and fantasy, which weaves the everyday problems of growing up into the age-old battle between good and evil. William's quest takes him on a journey to a land where he must fight a ferocious dragon, a wicked wizard and worst of all, the darkness within himself. "A satisfying quest fantasy with a strong element of modern realism which will appeal to a wide range of readers."
