As the book progresses, you can visualize the trail that Whyte has chosen. Forbid me to reveal all of the story line. Hopefully, Whyte will have a few surprises and unforeseen twists that will keep the story interesting.
The Singing Sword
(Camulod Chronicles, Bk 2), Jack Whyte, Tor Books, May 1997, ISBN: 0812551397 Paperback, 547 pages The Singing Sword is the type of book that most authors prefer to write, a second book of a series that is actually good. I do have my issues with it. The Cylla Titens affair seems to overshadow everything in the first half of the book. I tried to determine why I felt that this was so, wondering if the sexual titillation of Publius and secondarily the reader, myself, shifted it. But when it finally cleared, I find myself feeling that it was because the first section of the book didn't carry the storyline forward for me as a reader. There was a purpose in Whyte's structure - a depiction of the beginning lawlessness and laxness of moral character, but it could have been crystallized down to a couple of chapters or intersperced into the plot. In other words, from the author's own words - "I dozed off, eventually, then woke again ..."

Jack and his wife homesteaded in 1904. Before homesteading
they ran the Windsor Hotel on First Avenue South in Lethbridge.
He later worked with his team when they were sinking the shaft
in Coalhurst, hauling water from the river.
His house was on a high hill and in 1926 he moved it to the
southeast comer of his land. He milked cows and delivered
the milk to Coalhurst.
Anyone who knew Jack would remember him because he always wore gumboots. He passed away around 1948. Mrs. Whyte had the house moved into Coalhurst and this was where she lived until she passed away. The farm was purchased by Russell Clifton who still owns the land. Return Individual Histories

    Writing Arthur
A Cautionary Tale From An Archaeological Reader By Sandra Garside-Neville
Reading In 1951 Alfred Duggan published Conscience of the King Conscience of the King has recently been republished by Methven, after being out of print for a long time. Sword at Sunset , published in 1963. In fact, this is the Death of the Corn King The Lantern Bearers by Sutcliff, published in 1959, sets the scene for Sword at Sunset , and is generally counted as a book for junior readers. A 1980s novel of note is The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. The setting is very much New Age-cum-medieval. It does not fit well archaeologically, and could be marked down by some purists as fantasy. It has, however, given rise to several novels/trilogies that are written from a female point of view, which was, in some ways, a relief from all the male-warmongering of previous decades. However, the best novel of the 1980s in my opinion is Firelord The 1990s were chock-full of trilogies, some of which I have yet to read; some of which I refuse to read! Camulod Chronicles Writing knows Bradley, Marion Zimmer, 1982.

The third book in Whyte's popular Camulod Chronicles, which retell the Arthurian tale in a historically accurate manner, is just as gripping and powerfully written as the first two books ( The Skystone and The Singing Sword ) and will likely help increase the popularity of the series. Brood takes the story from Caius Merlyn Britannicus' childhood through the conception of Arthur. As a highborn heir of Roman colonists, it is Merlyn's responsibility to protect Camulod and spread Roman civilization. At first he is aided by his cousin, Uther Pendragon, whom he idealizes, but then he starts receiving inklings that Uther may be harboring dark secrets. When love enters Merlyn's life in the form of Cassandra, it signals the end of the cousins' close relationship and starts a series of events that threaten to destroy the colony. Along with intriguing explanations for Excalibur and the Lady of the Lake, the book is chock-full of sexual dalliances and bloody battlefield conflicts. Highly recommended. Eric Robbins (Booklist/September 1, 1997)

Chronicling Arthur
Cornwell, Bernard. Excalibur. June 1998. 448p. St. Martin's, $24.95 (0-312-18575-8). Whyte, Jack. The Saxon Shore. June 1998. 496p. Tor/Forge; dist. by St. Martin's, $26.95 (0-312-86596-1). The newest installments in two highly regarded Arthurian series. Cornwell continues his dynamic Warlord Chronicles retelling the Arthurian legends from the point of view of one of Arthur's trusted warlords, Derfel. Recounting events long after the king's death, Derfel portrays a reluctant leader driven by fate and his own sense of honor. This compelling volume follows Arthur through his final battles and reconciliation with his banished wife, Guinevere. Cornwell brings a modern religious sensibility to his vivid interpretation of the times, casting the conflict between the Britains and the Saxons as a war between the old gods and the Christian god played out through the powermongering of men. Not only is Cornwell keen on religious and political themes, he also has Derfel relate vivid accounts of the curiously courtly rituals and etiquette of this fabled war, fashioning an exciting, intelligent, and mythic novel of duty, betrayal, greed, and love.
