ei Dao is one of several pseudonyms employed in the past by the poet and writer Zhao Zhenkai to conceal his identity from the Chinese authorities. "Bei Dao" means "North Island," and was chosen arbitrarily for the poet by a journalist colleague. It has no significance for its owner , beyond the fact that it is the name by which he is known to the rest of the world. I will not kneel on the ground Allowing the executioners to look tall Waves (1987, ISBN 0-8112-1134-7), the stories established Bei Dao as one of China's leading literary figures. Historian Jonathan Spence, writing in the "New York Times Book Review," called the stories in "Waves," "almost unbearably poignant." He lives with his daughter in Davis, California. "To categorize Bei Dao as merely an exile or disssident is to miss the point. Bei Dao is simply a poet. There's no greater threat to totalitarianism than individuality, and few living writers possess a voice as elegant as that heard in Unlock - Andrew Ervin

The forest
When in Angola, do not enter the forest of the Cokwe at night. For there Muhangi, an old man, once a great hunter, runs through the woods screaming. Kanyali, in the form of a girl, chases wanderers with a termite hill on his head. Kapwakala, a child who lives in the holes of trees, rustles an apron made of hide. There is Ciyeye, a bonfire that walks, and Kalulu, a small red child that whizzes buzzing through the air. Samutambieka, an unknown animal with one foot, one eye, one ear, and one tooth, carries a club red with the blood of humans. And worst of all is Nguza, a large eye that squats on a tree branch and stares.
Blue eyes
I was in a village on the Amazon, waiting day after day for a boat to get me out. I slept in the one place that let rooms; switching on the light at night, the ceiling was covered with hundreds of transparent salamanders, motionless and upside-down. The one place to eat was a windowless shack with an unlit kitchen and two metal tables outside on the dirt road that was the only street. I sat. In one late afternoon of sitting, an elderly man came down the road and spoke to me. " Sprechen sie Deutsch?

Against Forgetting
This taxonomy, like the Hindu caste system or editorial policy anywhere, has subtleties of distinction that are impossible for outsiders to grasp. Tadeusz Borowski is a witness of the Holocaust because he was interned in Auschwitz and Dachau. Nelly Sachs is a witness of the Holocaust because she wrote poems about the Holocaust from her exile in Sweden. Irena Klepfitz is a witness of the Holocaust because she was born in Warsaw in 1941 and was hidden in the countryside, emigrated to the U.S. as a child, and wrote poems about the Holocaust in New York City. Charles Reznikoff is not a witness of the Holocaust because he was born in the U.S. and wrote poems about the Holocaust in New York City.
Against Forgetting The Anthology of Poets Who Committed Suicide
Outcry from the Volcano Conjunctions Grand Street
, and other magazines, where they have provoked considerable interest.

Response and Reconciliation
By Octavio Paz
Translated by Eliot Weinberger
I.
Ah life! Does no one answer?
His words rolled, bolts of lightning etched
in years that were boulders and now are mist. Life never answers. It has no ears and doesn't hear us; it doesn't speak, it has no tongue. It neither goes nor stays; we are the ones who speak, the ones who go, while we hear from echo to echo, year to year, our words rolling through a tunnel with no end. That which we call life hears itself within us, speaks with our tongues, and through us, knows itself. As we portray it, we become its mirror, we invent it. An invention of an invention: it creates us without knowing what it has created, we are an accident that thinks. It is a creature of reflections we create by thinking, and it hurls into fictitious abysses. The depths, the transparencies where it floats or sinks: not life, its idea. It is always on the other side and is always other

18. Circulars: Eliot Weinberger: Statement For "Poetry Is News" Conference
11 Main Situationist International Détournement as Negation and Prelude »February 03, 2003 eliot weinberger Statement for Poetry is News conference
http://www.arras.net/circulars/archives/000130.html
Main February 03, 2003 Eliot Weinberger: Statement for "Poetry is News" conference [I've just got this one dropped into my inbox. It is probably the most cogent, but also willfully controversial, statement I have read on the situation of poets right now, especially his assessment of the three options for creative intervention. It is the third, poets turning to prose, that has most inspired the creation of this site that and the fact that Bush's speech writer is an evangelical Christian I am both pessimistic and optimistic about what's happening and briefly, or not so briefly, I'd like to say why: First, I take the word "politics" in a very narrow sense: that is, how governments are run. And I take the word "government" to mean the organized infliction or alleviation of suffering among one's own people and among other peoples. Meanwhile, Ronald Reagan was completely dismantling the social programs of the New Deal and Johnson's Great Society creating the millions of homeless, the 25% of American children who live in poverty, the obscene polarization of wealth, and so on. (And the poets, typically, were only moved to speak up when he cut the NEA budget.) Clinton might have had a more compassionate public face, but essentially the political center had shifted so far right that today the Democratic party is to the right of any European conservative party, and the Republicans just slightly to the left of a European national front party. We may never live to see an American president as left-wing as Jacques Chirac.
