On the Friendship Betwixt Two Ladies
Tell me, lovely, loving pair!
Why so kind, and so severe?
Why so careless of our care,
Only to yourselves so dear? By this cunning change of hearts,
You the power of love control;
While the boy's eluded darts
Can arrive at neither soul. For in vain to either breast
Still beguiled love does come,
Where he finds a foreign guest,
Neither of your hearts at home. Debtors thus with like design,
When they never mean to pay, That they may the law decline, To some friend make all away. Not the silver doves that fly, Yoked in Cytherea's car; Not the wings that lift so high, And convey her son so far; Are so lovely, sweet, and fair, Or do more ennoble love; Are so choicely matched a pair, Or with more consent do move.

Edmund Waller
Edmund was in 1606 and inherited Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire. He was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge. In 1631 he married a London heiress who died three years later. He entered Parliament early and was at first a brilliant and active member of the opposition. Later he became a Royalist and in 1643 was the leader in a plot (`Waller's plot') to seize London for Charles I. For this he was imprisoned, fined and banished but, on betraying his associates, spared execution. He made his peace with Cromwell in 1651, and returned to England. He was received again into royal favor on the Restoration and was once more a member of Parliament. The eighteenth century gave Waller rather more credit than he deserved for the development of the heroic couplet, deeming him, with Denham, the founder of the school of correct verse. He died in 1687 anfter a short illness. Go Lovely Rose The Self Banished Back Home ... Email

THAT which her slender waist confined
Shall now my joyful temples bind;
No monarch but would give his crown
His arms might do what this has done.
The pale which held that lovely deer:
My joy, my grief, my hope, my love,
Did all within this circle move. A narrow compass! and yet there
Give me but what this ribband bound,
Take all the rest the sun goes round!
Go, lovely Rose
Tell her that wastes her time and me,
That now she knows,
When I resemble her to thee, How sweet and fair she seems to be. And shuns to have her graces spied, That hadst thou sprung In deserts where no men abide, Thou must have uncommended died. Small is the worth Of beauty from the light retired: Bid her come forth, Suffer herself to be desired, And not blush so to be admired. The common fate of all things rare May read in thee; How small a part of time they share That are so wondrous sweet and fair!
Old Age
So calm are we when passions are no more.

    Poems . The first fully authorized edition was that of 1664. In 1655 appeared the " Panegyrick to my Lord Protector ", celebrating Cromwell , and in 1660 " To the King, Upon His Majesty's Happy Return ", celebrating the restoration of Charles II . To Samuel Johnson this writing of panegyrics to both Cromwell and Charles evinced moral vacuity. Upon Charles' observation that Cromwell's was the better poem, Waller supposedly answered: "Sir, we poets never succeed so well in writing truth as in fiction." Waller's later works include Divine Poems (1685) and The Second Part of Mr. Waller's Poems , posthumously published in 1690.

    WALLENSTEIN, A. E. When the war against the Bohemians had become a widespread conflagration, Ferdinand found he had no forces to oppose to the Danes and the Northern Protestants other than the Army of the League, which was not his, but the powerful and independent Maximilian's, instrument. Wallenstein saw his opportunity and early in 1626 he offered to raise not a regiment or two, but a whole army for the imperial service. After some negotiations the offer was accepted, the understanding being that the troops were to be maintained at the cost of the countries they might occupy. Wallenstein's popularity soon brought great numbers of recruits to his standard. He soon found himself at the head of 30,000 (not long afterwards of 50,000) men. The campaigns of this army in 1625, 1626 and 1627, against Mansfeld, the Northern Protestants and Gabriel Bethlen, are described under THIRTY YEARS' WAR. At the same time the victory of the principles of the League involved the fall of Wallenstein's influence. By his ambitions, his high dreams of unity and the incessant exactions of his army, he had made for himself a host of enemies. He was reported to have Irritated by the distrust excited by his proposals, and anxious to make his power felt, he at last assumed the offensive against the Swedes and Saxons, winning his last victory at Steinau on the Oder in October. He then resumed the negotiations. In December he retired with his army to Bohemia, fixing his headquarters at Pilsen. It had soon been suspected in Vienna that Wallenstein was playing a double part, and the emperor, encouraged by the Spaniards at his court, anxiously sought for means of getting rid of him. Wallenstein was well aware of the designs formed against him, but displayed little energy in his
