The SALON Interview
DAVID FOSTER WALLACE
By LAURA MILLER Illustration by Harry Aung D avid Foster Wallace's low-key, bookish appearance flatly contradicts the unshaven, bandanna-capped image advanced by his publicity photos. But then, even a hipster novelist would have to be a serious, disciplined writer to produce a 1,079-page book in three years. "Infinite Jest," Wallace's mammoth second novel, juxtaposes life in an elite tennis academy with the struggles of the residents of a nearby halfway house, all against a near-future background in which the U.S., Canada and Mexico have merged, Northern New England has become a vast toxic waste dump and everything from private automobiles to the very years themselves are sponsored by corporate advertisers. Slangy, ambitious and occasionally over-enamored with the prodigious intellect of its author, "Infinite Jest" nevertheless has enough solid emotional ballast to keep it from capsizing. And there's something rare and exhilarating about a contemporary author who aims to capture the spirit of his age. The 34-year-old Wallace, who teaches at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal and exhibits the careful modesty of a recovering smart aleck, discussed American life on the verge of the millennium, the pervasive influence of pop culture, the role of fiction writers in an entertainment-saturated society, teaching literature to freshmen and his own maddening, inspired creation during a recent reading tour for "Infinite Jest."

David Foster Wallace Reads. Fans Swoon. Thief
One of David Foster Wallace's New York readings was in a very small bar that either
a) bit off more than it could chew b) didn't realize Wallace's popularity OR c) wanted to be cool by having 3/4 of the people who showed up left frustrated on the stairs and street outside. People started arriving two hours ahead of time and the author himself had a hard time getting in. After the reading, Wallace was mobbed with fans holding out brand new copies of Infinite Jest to be signed. I overheard one woman tell the author she had written to him before, and he never replied. Then she asked him to sign her copy, ''To Spanky Pants." Wallace did. I asked the following questions out of my own obsessed curiosity. I'm sure they'll also be of interest to Spanky Pants and her ilk. Having read the book is probably a requirement for this to make any sense.
Valerie Stivers: David Foster Wallace: The length is the one thing that anybody can tell by looking at the book, and hence really appealing to talk about in things like reviews... Its not that [long].

David Foster Wallace

A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again
(Paperback (trade)) "Mr. Wallace's distinctive and infectious style, an acrobatic cartwheeling between high intellectual discourse and vernacular insouciance, makes him tremendously entertaining to read, whatever his subject." -Laura Miller, New York Times Book Review "A heady, often hilarious tour of American diversions....A remarkably talented, fluid, and arresting young voice." -Alex Abramovich, Entertainment Weekly "He's the real thing....Beneath the fun and the verbal high jinks, there is a passionate and deeply serious writer at work." -Brigitte Frase, San Francisco Chronicle "As funny and brilliant as any nonfiction book in recent memory." -John Glassie, Time Out New York Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (Paperback (trade)) "A supersonic delight, a full-scale harassment of the short story form.... David Foster Wallace is one badass fiction writer."
Benjamin Weissman, LA Weekly

"Infinite Jest"
By David Foster Wallace
Published early in 1996, David Foster Wallace's remarkable novel Infinite Jest quickly acquired a tremendous level of notoriety for its then 33-year-old author. It's an astonishing work, dense and darkly brilliant. This page collects a number of reviews and articles pertaining to the book, the author, and his oeuvre.
here
  • Sven Birkerts's review from the February 1996 issue of the Atlantic Monthly was one of the earliest appraisals of Infinite Jest and it created quite a bit of excitement for the novel. Birkerts slings around alot of faux postmodern academic lingo, and the review has an overheated and breathless quality about it, but it is essential reading.
  • Rather ecstatic Newsweek review (2.12.96 ) by David Gates. Includes a brief interview with Wallace. (Gates is himself an accomplished novelist. Jernigan (1991), a dark comic take on male mid-life dissolution, is well worth a look.)
  • Oft-quoted Newsday review (2.12.96) by Dan Cryer.
  • Very astute review from the online BookPage site , written by Erich Strom (2.96).
